A quick test to see if it's running too lean (starved for fuel) is to gently push the primer bulb. If the motor spins up (revs), it's likely a clogged high speed jet. If it stalls immediately, then it's running too rich and you need to cut back on the high jet.

See http://www.repairfaq.org/samnew/lmfaq/lmadjc.htm for some quick and dirty (but good) instructions on adjusting the jets to fine-tune your engine.

As for the primer tube, if the bulb pulls fuel and fills up when pumped 3-8 times, then things are fine. If the bulb never gets fuel, then you may have identified a potential cause (missing tube).

I have a Troy Bilt trimmer model TB675EC...4 cycle engine. Problem that has arisen is that it dies at high speed and under load. Starts up and runs at idle well.

Fuel starved, carb should have an idle adjustment which sounds like it is fine. Look for the second adjustment

Chainsaw wont stay running Runs 30sec to about 1 1/2 min seems to be starved for fuel

Initial carb setting is 1 full turn out on both low and high side and retry. If no difference, then turn the low side out and additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn CCW. If that makes no difference, then it's time for a carburetor rebuild.

Poulan 40cc 18". Not starting. Muffler full of liquid (gas?). Very hard to pull with plug installed, easy with it removed. New plug, good spark.

You might have a hydraulic lock in the engine if you squirted too much fuel in the engine while trying to start it. take the plug out, hold the throttle wide open and pull starter rope 5-6 times to clear it. Put plug back in and try to start it.

I have a husky 455 rancher.never had a problem till today, worked fine this morning, now it iwll start but as soon as i put it under load it dies, cannot even rev the engine, it idles ok, but once i open...

When this has happened to me, it turned out to be a hole or crack in the fuel line. At the higher revs, more fuel is needed. The added "suction" for the higher demand pulls air into the line and the unit does not have enough fuel to run. Check for that first and also the fuel filter inside the tank. The filter might be clogged as well.

Keep us posted,
Dan

McCulloch chain saw. MCC1840B. 40cc. Will start but runs wide open with no throttle. Dont see any adjustments screws on carb. Could it be a air leak?? thanks

Hey mate,

Yes it definately sounds like you have a air leak or the unit is starving for fuel...

Check over your fuel filter flush it out also if you can see it check the gasket and intake manifold for cracks or leaks after that if you are confident you can clean out the carby.

If none of that works then i would say one of your crank seals or base gasket is leaking and being that model they are not the easiest saw to work on and would reccommend taking it to your local small engine repairer...

Hope this helps
Kind Regards
Brad

Wont run without choke being pulled out 1/4 .

INFO:
-Remove Carb and clean, you have a high speed fuel port clogged.

NOTE:
This would also be a good time to replace your fuel lines, Take photos before you start.

RECOMENDATIONS:
-Drain all fuel from the Saws fuel tank.
-Remove and REPLACE with a NEW spark plug.
-Remove and RELPACE with a NEW Air filter.
-With spark plug and air filter removed and fuel drained pull the starting cord many times 12 or so to ensure there is no fuel in the chamber and also check for a spark at the plug.
-RE-MIX WITH NEW FUEL your 2 cycle oil to the correct ratio in a clean fuel can. it is OK to dump some in the Saws fuel tank slosh around and dump out in an approved container for disposal.
-Hold off on putting back on the air filter until you have had it running.

Hope this Tip Helps.

My ryobi 40cc chainsaw wont start, spark at plug and sounds like it wants to go but there is no compression. any advice as to what im doing wrong

'No compression' usually means serious mechanical problems with the piston/rings, but if this unit has a compression release, then it may be 'set' which reduces compression considerably until the engine fires. Try putting some fuel mix into the cylinder head spark plug hole and reinstall the plug. If it runs for a few seconds, then look into the fuel delivery system (did the compression increase?). Check that the carburetor is bolted tightly to the engine and the fuel lines are intact. Make sure the choke will close all the way and the throttle opens all the way. Make sure that the primer bulb fills with fuel after several pumps. Assuming that the engine ran properly for the people that 'reconditioned' the saw, this unit should not be giving you problems like this.

Dies at full throttle.

Hi,
Has it been standing for a while?
Few things to check.
1: Fuel filter in tank. Use a piece of bent wire to hook the filter through the filler hole and pull it out and swap it.They get gummed up with oil if they have been standing.
2: Fuel hose. Even the tiniest pinhole in the fuel line will cause exactly the problem you have.
3: Many chainsaws have another hose that goes from the crankcase to the carby, this is the "pulse line" and is just as critical as the fuel line.
4: Although one tuning jet is marked "H" for high speed, & one is marked "L" for low, at full revs they both deliver fuel, see if you can richen ( turn anti-clockwise ) the "L" jet a bit more and try that.

Please let me know and give me some more info, I have all confidence we can nail it.

Honda GCV160 5.5 on a pressure washer runs only intermittently

The problem is the plastic float in the carburetor, it's not adjustable and after sitting up with gas in it it distorts. Save yourself the trouble and buy a new one, you can get them online for $15-$20.
