Question about Boating

Boat won't start

1984 Sea Ray Seville. 18' 6'', 4 cyl mercruister I/O. Battery works, smells like I'm getting fuel to the engine (via pumping throttle), but she doesn't turn over? I shrinkwrapped it and stored it outside for first time this past winter (Michigan), quite a bit of ''mold'' on seats.., uncle suggested I clean my spark plugs??? Any advice? Thank you. Dusty

Cleaning the plugs is a good idea. Check your gas for fuel separation. Being outside would give you more fluctuations in temperature even without a heated garage. Without any cover the Sun can beat down on the boat. You would not have mold without the heat building under the shrinkwrap. I see some shrinkwrap jobs now using metal vents on them.

Remember the outdrive muffs when you try to start it. Pyroil has a product with oil in the Starting fluid which may help you getting the engine to fire. Also remember to put the outdrive down so the Safety cutoffs are not killing the spark.

What is the fuel capacity of my 1994 Sea Ray Laguna 18' Center Console boat?

I found spec sheets only for two boats from 1994 that are 18'. Both say they have 30 gallon tanks. http://www.searay.com/boat_graphics/electronic_brochure/company1729/1C1_27_74DERNQMC747.pdf

Why genset not starting.

you say diesel so I assume that it is a diesel engine
The symptoms indicate low pressure in the fuel pump and that can be from air in the system or blocked filters
you mentioned deep sea controller so is it right to say that it is on a boat
If so then check the fuel tanks for a black moss like substance
this causes filter blockages and eventually gets to the pump and injectors and creates hard start problems
if so empty the tank and clean out as best you can
regularly use diesel fuel conditioner to stop the moss regrowth
It comes from condensation in the diesel tank and is a common problem in tanks that are left standing partly empty or with low fuel in them

My 1992 4.3l volvo boat engine has spark and fuel but wont run

I had this issue on my 1988 Sea Ray 4L. Spark may be too weak if your boat has old school points and condenser - gently clean the points contact surface with fine emory sandpaper - see if this works. Otherwise back to basics- Have you checked spark timing? Compression? If those are good would suspect fuel flow ain't what it seems. Good Luck!

Motor turns over won't start. Cleaned terminals, put in new battery, still won't start. Removed gas cap to vent air on hot day, still won't start. Lights all come on, all electrics appear to...

Your problem may be one of the following:
First check or just replace the fuel filter. Usually located under the car in front of the rear axle, drivers side.
Next, the fuel pump may be worn out. Usually they get loud or stop working (running).
Next, check the fuel pressure regulator. Usually located on the front fuel rail, drivers side.
Is the vacuum line attached? Not leaking or rotted?
Also, do you smell a strong fuel odor when it won't start? May be one or more stuck-open injectors, or the coil pack is bad.
Checking these in the order listed will more than likely fix your problem.
The clicking noise indicates the battery can no longer run the starter, which also means the fuel pump won't run either.

It could be a fuel issue. How old is the fuel filter? Can you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on? Try turning the key to ON without trying to start engine three times waiting for the pump to stop running each time. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, Its a form of Vapor lock caused by the extreme heat we have had lately, and a weak fuel pump.

If none of this works, try a new fuel filter first. From there have someone check the fuel pressure regulator and then the pump. If you are in need of a new pump, take my word for it and spend the money to get one from a Dealer, and not from your favorite parts store. Most parts store parts are made in China and they are JUNK.

95 YJ 4 cyl. Starts fine when cold. Have to crank it 3-4 times after it warms up. Runs fine once it starts.

Have you hooked a scanner to the computer and checked the oxygen sensor(s)? If they are bad they could lean out the engine.

How do we take of the battery clip to change the batteries?

Hi
The battery should be connected with a white or cream colored molex connector. Unfortunately when these connectors get hot they have a very low melting point. Make sure the connector is cool and then try to separate with pliers. Once separated you may have to replace both connectors. Your local hobby store can sell you the connectors and even do the replacement.

Hi, Check water in the distributer cap. If that doesn't work try the fuel pump relay.
