thank you for your reply, but; you advise has been done to no avail.. the amount of oil leaking is substantial. to the point that I have to refill the oil if I have the machine on for 20 minutes

Remove the cover again. make sure both mating surfaces are completely free of old gasket material, dirt and debris. use a bit of fine sand paper to make sure its clean. use a new gasket. when you bolt the cover on, use a criss - cross pattern when tightening the bolts. go over them a couple of times. if you have been tightening in a circular pattern, the gasket can distort causing your leak. good luck!

is it possible that the cover was over torqued and cracked? clean the cover and look at it very closely, that would be my next suspicion.

How do I adjust the valves on a Briggs and Stratton Intek V Twin

Remove the valve covers look up your valve clearance specs turn the engine by hand until the piston is at top dead center then go 1/4 turn past that and then put a feeler gage for the valve clearance you need for that valve and snug up the adjustment nut. Check your oil when your done some oil will spill out when opening the valve cover.

Remove the cover for the valves by the spark plug and adjust both valves at .008 gap
That will end the back firing. They have locking nuts (double nuts) at each valve to adjust
