The Compaq Armada M700 laptop has a PATA (or IDE) hard drive verus a SATA hard drive which is the newer standard. This computer's factory hard drive could not have been any larger than 20 GBs. However, one this size is not readily available anymore so you'll have to go larger. Here is the type of hard drive that you need: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8692373&type=product&id=1198286608739

What is the biggest hard disk that i can put in my notebook???

Rather than put a new drive inside your machine, which will mean opening it up and fiddling around in a very limited space, have you considered getting an external hard drive? You can now get 1Tb for a very reasonable price. As long as your hard disk has enough juice to boot you up, you could then switch everything over to your external drive. Consider getting one with its own power source, so it does not put too much pressure on the laptop to power it via the USB.

Followed directions online of how to reseat the hard drive, put it back together and it still does not recognize the hard drive. Now what?

You can run the built in Dell hard drive diagnostic or trust me that the hard drive is bad. The controller goes first, meaning data recovery is near impossible by conventional methods. If you have alot or just valuble data on it, you can send the bad drive out to the drive maker or a company like Western Digital for recovery. They're fairly reasonable in price compared to other solutions.

We have an older Toshiba Sattelite A70 laptop which is extremly noisy. It also switches off a while if lying down on a flat surface, which means it appears to be overheating. Is this a common problem with...

The noise is most likely an extemely dirty cooling fan. To find out for sure that it's your fan and not your hard drive, take your hard drive out and then turn your computer on. If the noise is still there it's most likely your cooling fan, if not then it's your hard drive. If you don't know how to take your hard drive out or open your computer up to clean it you'll need to take it to someone who can.
Next, you can get a laptop cooler from most office or computer supply stores or any of the online computer parts sites. They range in price from around $10 to over $50. I recommend looking at the descriptions and online ratings, then picking one that best fits your needs rather than going on price alone.

My thoughts is that one if not a couple of the PC boards inside is cracked or broke. More than likely you broke the inverter power board which lights up your display.
May be a time for a new laptop. Would cost more to repair than to buy you an new laptop.
My thoughts is you may find another one on E-bay that has some minor issues or in need of a hard drive and you could take the hard drive out of yours and put it in the new/used one.

Purchase a 2.5" Hard drive enclosure. Install the hard drive into the enclosure and plug it in to another computer.

Hi

When your screen broke...was it due to a fall or shock...

It could be possible that some sectors on the hard disk is damaged and would require opening up...

Try and looking out for any grinding or ticking noise

You might want to try and take your hard disk to a local computer shop to send to recovery centres although it could turn out to be a bit expensive...

Toshiba Satellite A300 - no acces to second HD

Okay, the driver for the second hard drive (hal.dll) needs to be reinstalled.

Do the following:

Press the windows key and R
Type in command
In the command prompt that comes up:
Type in cd C:\Windows\System32\
Type in taskkill /f /im "hal.dll"
Type in del hal.dll
Then restart your computer

What taskkill does is kill the second hard drive applications that is using the driver so you can delete it. After your system restarts, Windows will automatically reinstall the second hard drive driver, and the problem will be fixed!

TOUCH PAD NOT FUNCTIONING

Well this depends. If he did a restore that involved formatting the hard drive (or a detsructive restore), then no can't help you. If not, he may of just installed Windows over itself, leaving your file system intact. Either way,it's hard to say, because being your computer, I don't know where you ha your files saved to start. But more than likely you will have to start over.

Error code 1000-0146

The hard drive has failed. You need a new 2.5" IDE laptop hard drive which are only about $60-$120 depending on capacity. You will then need to reload Windows XP and all your programs. Hopefully you have the dell "resource cd" which has drivers on it as well and an XP install CD.

I would get a hard drive from www.newegg.com they have reasonable prices. Just make sure NOT to get a SATA drive.
