Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 Digital Camera
Most likely there is a fault in the lens - impact or sand/grit are the most likely cuplrits. It needs to be serviced.

You can try spraying compressed air into the front of the lens assembly, in hope of freeing up the sand/grit that may be hindering the operation. Here is an excellent blog about things you can try to get it working again. If nothing works, and you do decide to have it serviced, get an estimate first. The cost of repair can easily exceed the replacement cost of a new camera.
