Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Replaced Kenmore 90 coupler - now NOTHING works!

My Kenmore 90 Series washer had a broken motor coupler. It would agitate, but wouldn't spin. So we replaced the coupler, and now it won't agitate OR spin. Help?

I'm pretty sure it's not the lid switch...I should have given a better description of the problem (sorry!). The washer fills up, but won't agitate. It will drain, but it won't spin. It sounds like it's trying to agitate and spin...I stuck a screwdriver in the hole where the lid switch thingy is so I could watch it try to spin. I jiggled the basket...I mean - could it not be set in right? My father-in-law changed out the coupler...but he wants me to get some suggestions before he takes it all apart again. Ugh.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The first and easiest question is: Did you remember to re-connect the Lid Switch???

If it still won't agitate or spin, I'd check that the Motor coupler was installed correctly and hasn't destroyed itself.

I'd also test the switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

Whirlpool / Kenmore top load direct drive washers use a reversing motor.

    Since:

    1. It WILL drain

    and

    2. It Will Not agitate or spin:

the problem points to an incorrectly installed coupler:

    Hears why:

    The motor has two shafts.

One of the shafts thru the coupler drives the transmission for agitating and spinning:

The other shaft is directly connected to the pump.

Since it will drain (the motor is working) but will neither agitate nor spin (connection thru the motor coupler to the transmission) The first place I'd check is that the coupler has been installed correctly.

It's easy to incorrectly install the coupler (i've done it myself)

If it isn't installed correctly,(for example the plastic unit that fits on the gearcase shaft is broken) the motor cannot transmit power to the gearcase.

That's the first place I'd check.

Kenmore 90 does not spin (sounds like working & coupler is good)

If the coupler is ok then the next thing to check is the brake/ basket drive cam driver, the ear breaks off on em and won't release the brake. You must remove the agitator and drop the tranny to check itffbcc2d.jpg
Nothing is difficult about repairing the washer. I have repair photos HERE
