Remove the spark plug and retry pulling the engine through. If it spits out a fair quantity of liquid fuel, you have a flooding condition in the carburetor--usually a defective lower chamber diaphragm. If it still wont turn, then suspect that the engine has been run on straight gasoline without admixed oil--bad news!!. If this is so, it will have ruined the cylinder, piston, and ring(s) at a minimum. Compare labor and new parts against another comparable saw. Hope this helps and good luck!

Electric start on craftsman 9 hp snow thrower won't start engine it sound like it's turning but engine won't start. I can start engine with the pull rope. Started last week with the electric start.

Sounds like you need to replace the gear drive on the starter. If the starter turns but the engine is not turning you have starter problems.

I have a 3hp briggs & stratton//the pull rope pulls freely//it does not engage the engine and turn the engine over

You probably need to replace the starter recoil. This is not a very expensive fix. Just be aware that this problem is usually caused by having to pull the starter rope excessively because of some other starting problem. Once you replace the recoil, keep your engine running properly.

Engine doesn't turn over pull cord stuck

remove the starter assembly and see if it is the recoil or engine. if by removing the recoil it recoils the cord then it is most likely a seized engine but pull the rope a few times with the assembly in your hand to check it then try turning the flywheel by hand and see what happens

The problem the pull rope on a Homelite blower UT08934D doesn;t always retract. While working on it i found that the rotor was loose on the shift. I tighten the nut but didn't seem go all the way...

The Homelite/Poulan starter mechanism is of poor engineering and design. Problems with them are constant in the industry. They seem to work sporadically at best. If you have taken it apart, you have seen the inferior workmanship. Granted, all metal construction would wear also, but would be more heavier-duty and last longer. Another reason (the main one) why they don't last if from working the starter/recoil unit so much because the engine won't start. And when it doesn't, 9 times out of 10, it is a fuel system (carburetor) problem. Pulling on the wimpy unit 50 times so it can start once greatly reduces it's life expectancy, and overuse is the main reason they fail.

I have just purchase a Sears 22 Lawm mower, with a Briggs and Stratton 158cc engine. I prime the motor it act like it wants to start but then dies. I pull it and try to strat it several more times and it...

The procedure for starting an engine is as follows:
  • Check that you have the throttle in the start position and/or on high revs with choke on
  • Prime the engine by pushing the button about 5 times
  • Pull out the cord until you meet resistance. Then let the cord go fully back into the engine and then pull the cord out sharply. Repeat this until the engine starts but not more than a few times.
  • If the engine doesn't start, try pressing the primer button another few times then try to pull start the engine
  • If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls it may have flooded so leave it for a few minutes before pulling the starter rope

I have a honda gx390 13 horse engine I just put a new pull Rope on it and cleaned the carb its been sitting for 3k10 years when I pull the rope slowly it will turn the engine when I give it a good yank...

This is a common problem. The valves need adjusting in the motor. You may eventually get it started and running in this condition but you will probably end up breaking your pull rope a few times in the process. Take it to someone who works on small engines like a mower repair shop.

Doesn,t engage with engine

sounds like the dogs and or springs are worn. When you had the cover off the machine did you check that the dogs would freely move out when the rope was pulled? They some times stick and will not engage.

Cannot get my trimmer started.

Tom, it sounds like part of the rope has jumped off of the spool. There should be a small piece of plastic with a screw holding the spool in place. It may have worked itself loose.
