Question about Shoprider Sprinter XL4

Shoprider laid up for a couple of months Now only goes click

Hi again Scooterworks. I tried the carbon brushes and they were hot after trying to start the scooter. There is voltage getting to the moter The carbon brushes look like they are brand new and slide in and out fine. Could it be that the moter has siezed. or could it be something to do with the freewheel device, not engaging All the best Nigel

Hi Neil, Yes I can release the freewheel by hand and push it. But there is a little free play in the lever when in drive. I don't know if this is normal. There are no funny smells yet. But where is the solenoid. I am sure it is something simple. I only want to get it going again so as to sell it as we now have no need for it. I know very little about it as it was my Mothers Although her sister is now getting dogey legs so perhaps she would like it.
Now where is the solenoid. There is what looks like an extra bit at the far end of the motor, with a small wire going to it.
Is there anywhere I can wack with a hammer to try to free it.

  • nubsey Jun 01, 2010

Hi Neil, I have just tried that. I think I tapped the right bit There is a small brass looking unit attached to the end of the motor. It appears to be of two parts A disc attached to the motor and a cover
I tapped the disc attached to the motor, but nothing. Should there be some free play. It was tight. I was thinking of removing the wheel and taking the unit off as there are only three screws holding it to the motor. I have also though about removing the motor There are four allen key bolts holding that to the gearbox. I am sure it is something stupid like that.
I have cleared several clutchs that have stuck on cars before now.
But you cannot push the scotter if not in freewheel even with the drive swithed engaged, so no chance that way.
The trouble is whilst fine with cars, I have been unable to find anything that even list the parts we are talking about and have no idea how they should be when in working condition. But I think that thia could be the trouble, just like a cars clutch sticks.
Will drop the brake unit in the near future and let you know what happen. Many thanks Nigel

Hi Nigel. Sounds like the brake assembly ( Free-wheel ) is not releasing. Can you manually release the free-wheel and push to scooter? If you cant push it the the brake solenoid might be the fault. I have had a few over the years that have done this. The resistance through the coil should be approx 50 ohm's.
Otherwise the motor might be burnt out. Motors that are burnt out give a very distinctive burnt varnish smell. Good luck. Neil.

Hi Nigel. Just had another thought. I have had a few machines that have been sitting for a while and the brake disk in the brake assembly has rusted to the housing. If you look under the machine, you will see the brake unit on the end of the motor, yes the part with the two small wires. I have freed up the stuck brake units by tapping the edge of the brake disk gently. Use a flat bladed screw driver. Hold the end of the screw driver against the edge of the brake disk and gently tap it with a small hammer.

Do this with the free-wheel lever released so that there is no pressure on the brake.

    Good luck. Neil.

New carbon replaced produces too much sparks making it hot

Either your new brushes don't meet up with the armature properly or the commutator is damaged. Brushes usually 'wear in' within the first couple minutes of running. If it's getting excessivly hot you most likely have bad armature contacts and need to at least resurface the commutator or replace the armature.

Timers can be expensive whereas brushes generally arent. First of all unplug the machine and tilt it over. You will see the plastic brush holders either side of the motor at the back. You need to prize them out carefully and check if they are protuding over the end. If they are they are probably ok. Then you need some fine sandpaper. Hold this through the brush holder gap and press against the coil inside. Turn the motor by hand thus cleaning it off. Then put it back together and try it again.

`Hi. Sounds very much like a loose battery terminal, or a faulty battery lead connector.
I have also had a few machines that can start jerking because of worn or stuck motor brushes.
Also check the high/low speed switch if you have one, they sometimes cause problems.
How old are your batteries, worn out batteries can still be " fully charged", but are unable to supply the current ( amps ), that the motor needs.
Good luck. Neil.

Shoperrider no drive just a click

Hi. Sounds to me as if you have a sticky carbon brush in the motor. Each brushe is held in the motor by small black plastic or bakealite cap that screw in the outside or the brush holders. If these caps are not tight enough then the brush or the spring will arc from the side of the brush holder. This causes the brush to become jamed, and does not contact with the commutator on the armature.
You need to remove the brushes, check that they slide freely in the brush holders, fit new springs if neccessary, and reassemble. If the brushes are too tight, the file very carefully on the sides to allow them to move freely. Do not tighten the black plastic caps too hard or they will break, but they have to be snug. Be carefull.
Good luck. Neil.

A couple of reasons, you are either using non genuine inferior carbons, or the segments are worn on the armature are worn, this is not always obvious.
If the problem still persists after fitting genuine carbons, then you are going to have to replace the motor.
Hope this helps you with your prob.

Scooters should be charged weekly, leaving for 2 months without a charge will cause the batteries to be so low that they cannot recharge. These type of batteries willnot recharge never mind how long you keep them on charge.
I would suggest it needs some more batteries, yes expensive.

could be a carbon brush issue of the fan. try to wiggle the wire that goes to the fan. if the fan runs, then it is a carbon brush problem. you need to replace the carbon brush of the motor.

The solenoid is clicking but the car does not start

A couple of possibilities:
  1. the switching contacts of the solenoid are burned - you can try jumping the battery cable straight to the starter motor terminal;
  2. the carbon brushes of the starter motor are gone and/or not making contact with the commutator segments - might require replacement of brushes or the entire motor
  3. the big battery cable is loose - checking/re-tightening/replacment of clamps/connectors.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
