The round rotating part with the nose is the clutch drum, it has a small torx screw down inside the center retaining it to the crankshaft, remove this screw, block the cylinder and remove the clutch plates. remove the engine from the housing and turn it around to access the spool and a metal plate that has a few screws holding it in. there is a push nut that looks like a serrated ring holding the spool on the housing, sometimes it can be carefully removed but usually it fails and has to be replaced, it presses back into place upon reassembly. Do not remove this ring if you are not replacing the spring or pulley!!! Simply install your new rope and using the spokes on the pulley gather some slack in the rope and wind up the pulley about 5 turns in the direction it rotates as if you were pulling the rope, while holding the tension on the pulley, extend the rope fully and carefully release the pulley while holding the tension with the rope by its handle it should retract normally

How do I preload my Pull rope

Most recoil assemblies are easy to fix...but not in an obvious way. Remove the recoil asembly from the small engine housing/flywheel cover. Usually three bolts hold it on. 10mm on Honda's. Pull the remaining rope thru the exit hole if possible. Otherwise, fish remaining rope thru the hole by turning rope winding pulley as if pulling handle was still attached, lining up any remaining rope end and pushing thru the exit hole in outer recoil housing or backing it out the inside pulley. Continue to wind rope winding pulley in a counterclockwise ( facing pulley...not outer metal) untill it will not tighten any further. Remove any more old rope. Line up pulley hole and exit hole. Melt end of new rope into a tapered shape..if not supplied that way. the pulley can be held in place by inserting a screwdriver thru the both the pulley and the metal housing spokes. Thread the new rope thru the exit and pulley hole. Tie the rope end sticking thru and draw tight. Cut 6 feet of rope...if not using a presized pull. Release screwdriver from spokes and rope should draw up onto the pulley. Tie off opposite end of the rope to keep from losing that end into the exit hole. put the handle on the rope and tie a knot in the end to retain the handle. Untie the tie-off and allow the handle to fully retract. If handle does not fully retract you may shorten the rope so that it does...as long as you have plenty of pull lenght.

Exha 2425 pull cord jammed

I'm not sure if this is an attempted repair or whether this just "happened" but here is my repair procedure. Jammed could be worn or dirty rope or rope improperly sized for the machine...or crushed housing. A broken or slipped spring can seem jammed. Sometimes a spring can be re-bent on the inner most winding tab to catch on the housing.

The pull rope on my Bolens BL-160 string trimmer will not recoil. How can I fix it?

Recoil spring is broken or bent and is out of its slot. The kicker is most of the newer discount store models are being made where they are difficult to repair. This one has a starlock washer holding the assembly together. Unless you are VERY mechanically minded, you will need to by the case and recoil assembly together. It costs about 50% of the cost of the whole thing.

The pull rope to start my bolens bl150 weed eater broke and can't get the new one too wind up

You need to pretension the spring before installing. Easier to do this before attaching the line, but there is a technique (at least for larger engines) for adjusting spring tension with the line still on. If you need I can describe it for you or tell you where on youtube I saw a guy do this. That video was for a snowblower engine, but the technique worked on my chipper. I see no reason why it would not work on a smaller two stroke, assuming there is nothing wacky about the configuration. I would think that a recoil starter for a two stroke and a four stroke should all use the same principle,.

Pull cord on chain saw will not retract.

Most of the rancher models are easy to look at. Take the four screws off that hold the starter cover on.When off have a look to see if the pulley is ok or one of the starter dogs(pawls) is jamed . If dogs ok take the screw out of the centre of pulley and remove it ,check for spring tension. if there is just be carful to leave sring in housing. look at spring if broken or out of shape renew it and rope.check for cracks in pulley. When renewing spring and rope get correct rope length and diameter. don't over tension new spring. hop this helps
