If it was out of gas completely, after filling with at least 5 gal, turn key on, without starting. You will hear pump come on. After pump stops, turn key off. Repeat this procedure three times an the engine should start after the third time.

Let me know,

Chip

Well, that narrows things down a bit more. Are you sure it was out of gas when it ran out to begin with?? Only other thing that I think you might want to try as if it was out of gas, it should have started. On the fuel rail on engine there is a stem that looks like a air fill stem on your tire, it has a plastic screw on cap just like your tires. Unscrew this cap and with a helper, have on person turn the key on so the fuel pump runs like before. As the helper does this, take a small screwdriver and press in on the core inside the stem. If fuel comes out of this, then the engine is recieving fuel and so the fuel from the tank to the rail is okay. Therefore the problem is likely somewhere in the injectors or electrical system. IF no fuel is reaching the rail, then when the vehicle was out of gas, dirt/debris that gets into the tank overtime could have clogged up the filter inside the tank on the pump. A couple of solutions to that.

    1) Remove tank, replace filter strip on it.
    2) Can do this to try and save time and it not always will work but worth a shot. Try rocking the car back and forth manually. Sloshing the fuel back and forth in the tank will sometimes break lose the clog or the dirt on the filter and allow the fuel to be retrieved by the pump. If your car has a fuel filter on it as well, may also check this to make sure that it isn't clogged and replace as necessary. The pump coming on when you turn the key is a good sign it's not the pump.

I would first however check that fuel rail and see if fuel is making it to the engine. That will narrow it down from fuel from the tank issue or if it's injectors that are clogged due to low fuel in tank and debris in the injectors.

    Let me know,

    Chip

I've done that...starts but idle so rough it can't be driven. I've tried releasing air from the fuel rail..helps for a moment....but.. Still not driveable... Where's the fuel filter? PLEASE don't say it IN the fuel tank! LOL!

If your car has run out of gas try turning the key on but not starting the car for 1 minute then try to start it if it doesnt work then your just trying to force gas and it will burn up your fuel pump. if your car ran out of gas then it sucked up all of the dirty sediment from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter just replace the fuel filter and you should be fine.

SOURCE: fuel pump problem

Loose or faulty electrical connections at ignition coil. Check cables including ignition cables. Insufficient fuel reaching the injectors, vacuum leaks. Vacuum leak between the throttle body and intake manifold. Intake air leaks, broken vacuum lines etc. If its the fuel you suspect, try changing the fuel filter and pressure regulator.

Ran out of fuel ,changed fuel filter, now wont start

when you turn on switch u should hear fuel pump kick on for few seconds if no sound check for power at connection that connects to sending unit. you have to have someone turn switch to see if light tester lights up for first 2 to 3 seconds. If you have power to that point problems in a bad fuel pump.

My wife has ran out of gas several times in our 1999 chevy blazer, nowwhen I try to start it the ingine trys to turn over but it wont start like its not getting gas can you hgive me some suggestions

Possibly burned out the fuel pump. Lay next to the truck with your head by the gas tank. Have your wife turn the key on but not crank the engine. You should hear a light whirring sound of the pump priming and it will last a few seconds and stop. If you don't hear the pump priming, thump the tank near the sending unit as she turn the key. If it runs, you'll need to replace the pump. If it still doesn't run, check the fuse. If the fuse is good and you have a volt meter you can trace the wires to the pump and check for voltage (12) as the key is turned on. If it has voltage, replace the pump.

I have a 1990 VW Cabriolet that ran out of gas, put 5 gallons (gas) in it and now it wont start, turns over but wont fire

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You probably need to prime the engine. You need to put a little gas into the intake and then try starting it. Check to see if you have a fuel reset button. It may be located in the glove box. If you prime the gas, it should start. You might have to do this a few times before it will catch. If it doesn't, there might be a chance that you have another issue. Make sure you can hear your fuel pump kicking on when you first turn the key. Do this first. Turn the key on for 10 seconds and turn it off for 10 seconds. Do this 5 times and then try to start it. Repeat the process if you have to. This will prime the fuel pump.

Wont start, turns over.. changed the plugs, fuel filter, oil. battery.. used starting fluid and it ran for a sec then stops... when it first happened i check the fuses and came back in a few hrs, it...

I would check the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pump fuse. When you turn key to "start" you should hear the fuel pump turn on. If no sound then check the above. A cheap 12V probe tester can detect volts at the fuel pump electrical plug.

Honda passport ran out of gas. now won't start. Could be gas filter?Put 5 gals of gas in tank. Will start with gas added to air flter intake, but won't stay running

It's possible that you have an air bubble in the fuel line. This blocks fuel from reaching the engine. To clear it, you will have to bleed the line at the fuel filter.

The other possibility is that the fuel pump is not working. Turn the ignition key to the on position. You should be able to hear the fuel pump humming. If not, check the fuel pump fuse, in the fusebox under the hood. If the fuse is ok, you will need to trouble-shoot the pump.

Ran out of gas yesterdya and wont start today.

If you ran out of gas, then you will need to perform the following. Turn the key to the on position (do not start). Turn key off. Repeat the process a few more times. Also, have someone help you, for when you turn the key to on, you should be able to hear the fuel pump hum. After a few times, try starting the vehicle. Air has gotten trapped in the fuel injectors. By turning the key a few times, it primes the injectors. If it still will not start, or you cannot hear the fuel pump, then have it checked out. Hope that works. Let me know.

Ran out of gas and now wont start

Have someone turn the key on (engine off) pull gas cap and listen at the fuel tank filler tube for a humming sound for a few seconds fuel pump running,If you don't hear a humming noise check fuel pump fuses,if you hear pump running it is a good possibilty that the pump impeller broke from running dry and you will have to replace fuel pump.

My explorer ran out of gas, i filled it up to about a half a tank, now it just turns over but wont start

if it's fuel injected, look on the fuel rail for a schrader valve--looks just like a valve stem on a tire but shorter.remove cap, again just like on a tire.turn key to on-push valve stem in as if to let air out if you get air, then gasoline, you have just bled the system.replace cap, start car.if you get no gas, remove gas tank cap, turn on key, listen for ""hum'' of fuel tank.no hum, check fuel pump.modern[plastic] fuel pumps will self destruct if run dry, even for a short time.

My bmw 318 ran out of petrol now it wont start i have changed fuel filter

if you can't hear the fuel pump cut in for a couple of seconds, check the fuse. Check the relay, or replace it with a known good one. See if you have power to the fuel pump. If you have power, your fuel pump is in need of replacement.
When you run an electric fuel pump out of gas, you should always cycle it about 10 times before you try to start the engine. That is, turn the key to on for a few seconds, and then off, and repeat. You need to get some fuel up to the engine.
