Freezer is icing up in the back of the freezer behind cover

Our freezer is icing up in the very back compartment of the freezer and this is causing the freezer not to freeze. Everything in the freezer starts to thaw. When this happens the refrigerator section does not stay very cold either. Any suggestions?

If your model is the GLHS269ZDB0 the most likely cause for this is the adaptive defrost control Click Here=> Adaptive Defrost Control

-These refrigerators are a little tricky when it comes to adaptive defrost so stick with me on this one because when they go bad strange things will happen. Water is dripping into fridge compartment from section separating fridge and freezer compartments, otherwise, both seem to be working fine. unit was new in 2001, model ET21PK.

Hello,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

Fridge is not cooling

Check compressor is working. If working check freezer is working. If freezer is working with full of ice, check for auto defrost. If not, manually defrost it. In maximum units the main problem is fridge not cooling but freezer working alright. As over ice formed and covered up fan side (Behind Freezer), there won't be cooling in fridge compartment. Thanks.

Freezer does not defrost, ice piles up, using hair dryer to defrost. Refrig. 5 yrs. old. Thanks, Laura

unplug and unload the freezer section. a panel in the back of the freezer should come out. behind it is the evaperator coil. if it covered with ice, thaw it out with a hair dryer. check the fan near the evap. coil to see if it turns freely. after drying out compartment, plug back in and see if fan works. if all looks fine, look for a florescent looking light bulb in the compartment.have it checked and replace if needed

Freezer cold fridge not need some solutions

check to see if the evaporator is completely cover in ice.(evaporator is the cooling coil located behind the back panel of the freezer). If it is then you may need a defrost timer. Also make sure the fan in the evaporator compartment is running (if your unit has one)

Freezer works, frig does not. Also ice build up in freezer coil

I just worked on a FF801W which is supposed to be very similar. The defrost heater in mine was of the glass tube type and located under the evaporator. There was a bimetal thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator and a thermal fuse (sealed in a clear plastic tube) nearby. The connections were behind a little plastic cover (2 screws) in the back wall just above the evaporator.

Mine was iced up like yours and I had to defrost it with a hair dryer. All the defrosting parts in the freezer compartment turned out to work so I now suspect the defrost timer (down by the compressor). I've marked it and I'm waiting to see if it's turning.

Bottom Freezer has ice built up

Possibly the defrost element is faulty, this is located behind a cover in the back of the freezer compartment and is attached to the fins of the evaporator. It also has a defrost limit thermostat which could also be the problem. I presume that the fan is working after you have defrosted the unit?

Freezer side not freezing

It is possibly your defrost element which is not working causing a build up of ice and reduced airflow through the freezer compartment. This is located behind a cover in the freezer compartment. It is best to change both the element as well as the defrost limiting thermodisc which is attached to the fins of the evaporator.

Ice build up in bottom of freezer

Check the ice maker. sometimes they get cracked a will leak water into the freezer compartment. Also check the ice maker fill tube for leaks or someone could have spilled something. Although this is tipical of a clogged drain. What happens is when the fridge go into derfost, it will melt all the frost that is on the evaporator, turning it into water. The water drains down to a trough under the evaporator and down a drain hole in the trough ( this trough is behind the evaporator cover ) Removing the melted frost from the freezer. If that drain is clogged, the water cannot leave the freezer. Then when the fridge starts back up ,it will freez the water that was not drained. After repeated defrosting the water will fill this trough and run off into the bottom of the freezer to be frozzen when the fridge starts to cool again.

Hidden Ice build-up inside plastic bottom cover of freezer

Generally, icing is the result of too much water vapor inside the unit, blockage of the circulation channels and too much packing in of the box.  The water vapor is generally caused by: uncapped items in the fridge, opening the door too often, humid conditions, bad door seals.  There is of course, there is a possibility that the defrost cycle on the unit is not working.  About once a day, depending on the brand, you should notice that the fans and compressor don't run and you should hear a bit of creaking, sloshing or other strange noises as the ice melts.  If this is not happening, your defrost timer or the coil it heats could be bad.
