Furnace won't turn on- the red light is on. our gas was turned off @ the meter so the hot water guys could move the gas line. could this have killed the pilot flame?

Yes and it will have air in the line which will have to purged , why did the hot waterguy not relight it ?

A carrier furnace model 58dla110---10122 won't start


Make sure the kill switch on the blower door is closed, or furnace won't do anything. Then remove power from furnace for a few seconds, then try again. Still no go? Take a jumper wire and jump the "r" terminal to the "w" terminal on the furnace's board. This bypasses the thermostat. This is only for testing. If it still wont run, call service guy. Gas furnaces are not good things to tinker with.

My reliance sta-kleen 502 is leaking. The water is dripping on top of the pilot light, extinguishing the flame . Please advise me with step by step instructions to diagnose and attempt fix this myself....

Page shows how to limp along on a leaking water heater if your water heater needs replacement.

One of three things is causing the water:
1) Loose water connection on top of tank that is dripping down inside tank >> check pipes on top of tank.

2) The vent is clogged or not working correctly causing condensation inside flue pipe.
Condensation water is dripping back down inside tank.
Problem means possible CO poisoning if gas is not venting.
Look at vent pipe to see if joints are corroded.
Use long fireplace match > light match and put into draft hood at top of tank and see if smoke goes up.
Put hand at draft hood opening when water heater turns on to see if vent gas enters home.
Do same test when furnace turns on to see if furnace vent is pushing back into water heater.
Does water heater vent inside same pipe as furnace? You may need to set up separate vent for water heater if furnace gasses are pushing back into home.
Check furnace vent for obstructions.
Look at vent stack top of home to see if hood is in place.
Check if bird nest is built inside warm vent pipe.
Improper flue is top priority for getting fixed so vent gasses properly escape home.
You may have to call a plumber.

3) Your water heater is rusted out.
A rusted tank has to be replaced.
It cannot be repaired.
However, before replacing tank, you do not want a tank failure where tank ruptures and water runs inside home until water is shut off.
This will cause major damage.
Protect yourself first.
Turn off water valve above tank.
Move gas knob to 'pilot' so burner is not heating water.
Open tub spout on hot side to relieve pressure on tank so it will not rupture.

Now you're protected.
Link above shows how to limp along on failed tank until you can replace heater.

You need a new gas water heater from Lowes or Home Depot
Look at label on side of you tank for gallons and btu's of your water heater.
Measure height to flue pipe so you get same height water heater, so pipes don't have to be changed.
You need a pipe wrench and teflon tape which will be wrapped on each pipe thread when pipes are reassembled.

Step1) Drain water heater using valve at bottom of tank.

2) Turn off gas valve going into heater.
When gas valve is perpendicular to gas line, then gas is off.
Dissemble gas line to water heater.

3) Disconnect flue pipe and support flue pipe with wire so it doesn't not fall down. Flue pipe joints should be held together at each joint with 3 screws.

4) Turn off water. Shut off valve is on COLD side.
Disconnect water pipes.

5) Move old water heater out of way.

6) Set new water heater in place. Put water heater in drip pan.

7) Connect water pipes >> cold goes to side marked cold.
Hot to hot.
Buy new flexible water connector pipes at home center for easy installation of water pipes.

8) Connect gas line exactly as it was connected before.
Home center sells flexible gas line connector for easy installation of gas line.
To test for gas leak after installation, mix liquid soap with water and put around gas line joints to see if there are bubbles.
Natural gas has less pressure than water lines, so gas pipes are easy to seal with ordinary wrench.

9) install TP pipe that runs to floor. Use old one off old heater.

10) Fill tank completely with water until water is coming out of tub spout.

11) Turn on gas, and light pilot as shown in manual.
New gas heater sometimes have small water leak when first fired up, so ignore a bit of water.

12) Save water heater manual like it is gold, and read everything in manual.

I turn the thermostat on and the furnace tries to turn on three times before it turns itself off. The first time I see the gas blower turn on but it does not light the furnace up. The next two times I do...


This on blink of the light is a system lockout. It is caused when no gas is released to light the burner. The first thing to try is to turn the power off to the unit make sure your thermostat is off also. Turn the unit back on and make sure your gas is turned on. Then turn on the thermostat. Try this 3 or 4 times to make sure there is not air trapped in the gas line preventing ignition. If it lights after doing this you should check for a small gas leak at all fittings and shut off valves. The reason for this is to make sure you do not have a slow leak. If you smell gas turn off the furnace and your gas main valve and call a repair person. If you are unable to turn off the gas you should call the utility immediately. The cycle for your furnace is as follows. When your thermostate demands heat a signal is sent to your circuit board in the furnace and it turns on a exhaust fan to cause a draft to push air out the flu. (this fan is on 92% and higher funaces) This fan has two vacume lines that run to two vacume switches one is for the presence of vacume the other is for sensing the release of vacume. These are low voltage switches hooked into the 24v system. If the fan works and the switches sense vacume it then turns on the gas igniter this will be a glow bar and you will see it glowing. This in turn has a sensor that near it that can sense the heat from the glow bar igniter and it in turn turns on the gas by sending the 24v signal to the gas valve. If after 8 to 15 seconds the flame does not come on the system will reset and try again for a total of 3 times. If any of the above systems do not work your furnace will lock out because it thinks there is gas being dumped into the furnace. If the exhaust fan comes on you have 24v going thru your thermostat to the furnace. Then the vacume switches have to work. One is normally open the other normally closed. If you have a volt/ohm meter which can be purchased for as little as 10 to 15 dollars at a hardware store you can check these switches. You will need to set the thermostat to off and turn off voltage to your furnace for safety. Then locate the two switches by following the black rubber vacume lines from the exhaust fan housing to the switches. Pull the wires off the switches and with the meter set on ohms place the leads on the two terminals. While the meter is hooked up pull the vacume line off the fan housing and **** air in and out of the line the meter should swing back and forth as it senses vacume and the lack of it. If it does it is working. Then do the other vacume switch. Make sure to keep your wires and where the vacume lines go straight. You will also see a sensor mounted above and center where your burners are at it will have two wires going to it and it will be round it should show continuity ck it by removing the wires form it and touching the meter leads to the connectors the meter should respond showing continuity. There are two others under the burners on each side ck them the same. If any of your sensors have a pop ot button in the center press in on it yours should not this is an older version yours should be self reseting. The only other sensor is located in the blower for circulating the air. It is located on the right hand side of the blower housing with a red and yellow wire going to it. It has a reset in the center this sensor is used to trip if the heat in the blower housing gets to hot. This happens when the blower motor quits or is not able to move air fast enough due to restrictions. If the sensor has tripped you will feel and should hear an audible click when you press on the center button also if you check it for continuity it will show none and when you press the button it will show continuity. The next thing is the gas valve If all of the above work it is either the gas valve not opening or your circuit board. All of the parts are inexspensive until you get to the circuit board and the gas valve. The gas valve should be replaced by a repair person. You can replace everything else just make sure you turn off the power and pay close attention to the wiring. I hope this helps good luck. But not to down play the above make sure te top panel is in place put your hand on the gas valve and have someone turn on the thermostat. If the exhaust blower comes on and the ignitor glows you should then feel a click from the gas valve if you do not it us normally the circuit board. If you do and it still doesnt light you have no gas coming to your furnace. I hope this helps good luck

Our gas was shut off and when it was shut back on the tankless water heater not working. I can hear the pilot clicking but no flame.

Since it was turned off, there is probably some air in the lines, which may require several attempts to light it again. This is normal, especially on longer gas lines. If you have any other gas appliances, (furnace, stove) try lighting them also to help purge the gas lines and eventually it will get the right mixture of gas to relight the water heater too. Douglas

It appears your furnace is a downflow furnace. The sensor will be located near the bottom of the furnace. When you first turn it on, you should see a red glow.....this is the hot surface ignitor. Normally, the Hot Surface Ignitor is located on one end of the burners and the Flame Sensor is located on the oppoosite end of the Burners.

No heat coming from furnace,


Hi, this unit if you say hot surface ignitor has no standing pilot for you to light. Yes, the fan will run in the on position. Turn it back to auto. Leave it off. You will need 2 people, this will be easier for you. Go to the furnace and see if you have a round inspection hole to look through. If so, see if you see a red led light. Yes or know. Remove the panel to where you can see the circuit board, burners lined up and so on. Some units have a panel switch on them so when you remove the panel, it kills power to everything. It would be around the perimeter and you will need to tape it down real good. Now, have someone turn the thermostat to auto/heat and turn the heat up high. I know this is a Carrier with a hot surface ignitor, so you should be hearing the small inducer motor start running. If you did have a red led light and it is flashing, you will have a code sheet glued to the panel, a error sheet to tell you what is wrong, like if its flashing 3 times fast and 1 time long and slow you would look at chart and it will say what to look for. Some units have them and some don't.Anyway, the inducer motor comes on first, it has a clear plastic tube coming from it going to a pressure switch. If the motor is on and the tube is clean, no water, condensation in it, it goes to the switch and closes the switch.When it closes, it will send a command to the main controller, circuit board or a module to send power to the hot surface ignitor, which will glow and send a signal back to open the pilot valve(PV). There is a porcelin flame sensor next to the ignitor that has a metal tip which heats up and tells the main gas valve the pilot is on to open up and send gas from the 1st burner over to the 2nd and so on. This is the sequence of operation. We know the stat is good, and the blower motor is also good, so all we need to do is find out why the furnace wont light and run. It may have a flame roll out switch on it that has tripped. It has a reset button on it. Make sure the gas valve and gas is on before you do this test I am walking you through. Try to have a helper. Remember the door switch if it has one. This should be a easy fix, so get back to me and keep me posted on what is going on. I will wait to hear from you. You can do this.

Comfortmaker furnace will not light!!


Make sure you have gas to the unit and the switch on top of valve is turn to on. Can you here the gas valve click? It igniter comes on and a delay and the gas valve should come on. Kill power to furnace to reset control board. Rus Let me know how it goes.

Gas Line reconnected and now oven does not start up, pilot on


Check the hot surface ignitor if its not working valve will not open, It is located at the back bottom of oven. Sometimes they will appear to be work but if there isnt enough back emf the valve will not open.

Lighting the pilot light


The steps involved can vary slightly depending on your furnace model and pilot valve type, so if possible try and find the instructions inside the furnace door cover or in the instruction manual. This is for a gas fired furnace, but applies to any gas-fueled appliance including water heater. Two of the most common types of pilot valve body assemblies either have a red reset button and a gas valve or no reset button and a valve knob that can be depressed. But whichever type you've got, if you have an older model furnace with a standing pilot (flame is lit all the time) then this is the basic procedure.
  • Turn you thermostat to 80 degrees or to a setting that will demand heat. Make sure the thermostat is in "Heat" mode.
  • Go to the furnace and find the pilot valve. The pilot valve body is a box shaped device into which the main gas line will run and is located near the gas burners. It will usually have a gas **** or valve knob that reads "On, "Pilot" and "Off." Locate this gas **** or knob.
  • Turn the knob or gas **** to the "Off" position and wait about 3 minutes for any residual gas to clear away.
  • Find the pilot. It's located near the gas burner tube assembly in the furnace.
  • Get your match or lighter ready. Sometimes the pilot is hard to reach. If possible, try and use a long fireplace match when you light it. If you don't have a fireplace match then a butane BBQ grill lighter works well too. If you don't have that, then you can fasten a match to the end of a stick when you light the pilot
  • If you have a pilot with a red Reset button, turn the gas valve from "Off," to "Pilot."
  • If you have a pilot with no red button, turn the knob from "Off" to "Pilot."
  • Place the lit match or ignited lighter tip at the pilot and depress and hold the button or depress the knob as appropriate. Depress the button or knob for about 30 seconds. This maintains gas flow to the pilot until the thermocouple gets hot enough to open the main gas valve.
  • Once the pilot stays lit, slowly release the button or knob and turn the gas **** or knob from the "Pilot" position to the "On" position. This will ignite the burners and keep the flow of gas supplied as required for the burners as called for by the thermostat.
  • If the burners fail to ignite then it may be because the thermocouple did not get hot enough to open the gas valve. Wait a few minutes and then repeat the above procedure. This time hold the red reset button or depress the knob for about 45-60 seconds.
  • Once the main furnace burners ignite, adjust the thermostat to the desired setting.
  • If you've followed the previous steps on lighting the pilot and it still does not light after, or will not stay lit, then you probably have a problem with the thermocouple or an adjustment needs to be made to the pilot. You'll need a furnace service technician to replace or repair these parts. You may find that the pilot lights, but it is an anemic looking flame. That's a different problem we'll look at in the next section.
  • If the pilot lights but the flame is a weak yellow flame, it will not get hot enough to heat the thermocouple to its set point allowing the gas valve to open.
    A natural gas flame should be a bright blue with the tip of the flame having just a tinge of yellow. A propane flame should have a bluish green flame with a tinge of yellow at the tip. The flame should be strong enough to hit the thermocouple tip about 1/2 inch from the tip end. If the flame is weak or shaky looking, check to see that a breeze or draft is not blowing on it. Adjusting the Flame
    There is usually a small screw on the pilot valve body that will adjust the flame. You may have to refer to the manufacturer's instructions to find the screw. Turn the screw as needed to adjust the flame throw. Yellow Flame
    A yellow flame is caused by lack of air and incomplete combustion. It can be caused by a dirty pilot tube tip. Split Flame
    This is caused by dirt in the pilot tube. Take a needle or small nail and gently clean the tube. Flickering or Wavering Flame
    A flame that flickers is usually caused by a draft.
