Question about Kenmore 13719 / 13712 Built-in Dishwasher

1 Answer

My Kenmore 665.1371 Ultra Wash dishwasher is leaving a lot of white residue on the utensils when the wash cycle is completed. I'm not quite sure why this is happening. Am I using too much detergent?

Hi,

Residue can be from a couple different sources.

The most common is detergent residue. To resolve this leave the dishes dirty before washing, it is good to scrape food off but leave something for the detergent to react with. If the dishes are not that dirty use a small amount detergent in the main wash cup only. Run your hot water at the sink until hot before starting the dishwasher, this will make sure you have the right temperature to dissolve detergents. Lastly be sure to use rinse aid in the rinse aid dispenser, it will only need filled every month or so but check the gauge to make sure you have some in there.

The second thing that can cause residue is hard water. Look below the lower rack, there is a heat element, it is similar to an electric element in an oven. If the element is black or dark colored it you are okay, if it is white and much larger around in the middle than the very ends of it then you have a hard water build up in the machine. Running a cleaner through will help. See below.

The last thing that can cause a residue is residue of food stuck in the pump causing poor wash action, this typically starts with the top rack and moves down so I do not think this is your issue.

It is a good idea to run a cleaner such as: Lemi-Shine, Glisten, Rinse Aid dishwasher cleaner, Finish dishwasher cleaner. through the machine a couple times a year to help reduce build up inside the pump and arms. I would look at doing this regardless of the outcome of this problem.

Let me know if you need more information.

I got a layer of white cloudy film on my dishes after normal wash

Doing a full vinegar cleaning of the diswhasher is a good start, and every 6 months or so if you have hard water.
But, I have proven that using ultra-cheap dishwasher powder will cause this problem too. Recommend after you do the cleaining with white vinegar through a quick cycle with no detergent, you use only a brand name powder (like Cascade or Electrosol) and see if problems persist.
If problems remain, the heating element has probably failed. Once it is replaced, you will see a dramatic improvement. Good Luck!

My dishwasher leaves a cloudy residue on my dishes

The cloudy residue that is left on your dishes is soap that has not completly broken down.

There are a few solutions to the problem. First off, you want to ensure that you are using the "high temp wash" option. This will boost your water temp during the wash cycle to ensure that all the soap breaks down.

The second thing that you want to do to give your dishwasher a boost, is run the hot water in the sink and make sure it's pipping hot before you start your dishwasher. What this will do is ensure that the water that goes in for the "pre wash" portion of the wash is hot and will improve the wash quality.

Good luck!
