Oil ends up in the muffler if you over fill the oil...re-check the level and adjust as necessary...after that, run it...you need to "burn" the oil residue out of the muffler..

smell the oil if it smells like gas then the needle and seat in the carb is leaking if not remove the cylinder head and see if the gasket blew out and its sucking oil from the crankcase if not look at the bore for scores scratches and scraps

My son may have ran over some damp grass with our Briggs and Stratton 500 series, 158 cc lawn mower and now it smokes and leaks oil out of the exhaust, how do I fix this?

if he tipped it on its side to clean the grass off the oil will burn off but check the oil level he just tipped it so the crank case drained into the cylinder also check the air filter that might have got oil soaked as well

I stored my lawnmower on an angle all winter. Yesterday when I tried to start it oil came out of the exhaust. Today it started with alot of blue smoke, of course. what's my next step?

Just make sure the oil level in the crank case is OK, then just run it. The smoke will burn off once the muffler heats up, but it may take a while. The smoke is annoying, and not all so environmentally friendly, but it won't do the mower any harm. Just because the oil leaked into where it wasn't supposed to be, it doesn't mean that you have increased the ability for oil to leak that way. Good luck, Al K

Oil appearing at exhaust, smokey, briggs and stratton lawm mower.

You will need to replace or clean the air filter, and probably the spark plug. Do not operate the mower for some hours to allow the oil drain (inside the engine). Check oil level and fill it if necessary. Some oil remaining in the exhaust should be burnt next time the lawnmower operates. You will see smoke at the beginning, that will be normal (burnt oil). Hope this helps!

I have a gas Yard Machine Lawn Mower by Briggs and Stratton. I cannot keep it running and it is loosing oil. What do I need to do?

May be time for a tune up. Replace spark plug, air filter, change oil and sharpen blade. You may have some water in your gas. I would check to see where it is leaking oil. It may be the oil seal on the pto(bottom) side of the engine leaking and needs to be replaced.

Change the Oil

the easiest way would be to purchase a manually pump up oil change device that draws a vacuum and you put the tube from that device in the oil fill hole and draw it out to its own container
