This can be an issue with the physical tape or the tape assembly. I would recommend trying another tape to see if that helps. Also try pushing in mech from the otherside
If you "helped" the tape out in any way, that action most likely caused more damage. When a qualified technician sees an item before "customer induced damage" their job is easier and no "unusual" parts are broken which puts them in a good frame of mind and translates into a repair that you can be happy about. However, if only the "eject" button was used to get the tape out, this is a fairly common symptom and worth taking to an experienced professional.
remove battery for a while .put it again and try .if not works...remove battery agin then put it again by keeping power switch off. eject and remove cassette .take several eject operations. now try again.
