Question about Frigidaire FRS23H5AS Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

I have a frigidaire model FRS23H5ASB9 side by side. The condenser is freezing up with a block of frost and ice. The freezer gets cold but not very cold. The refrigerator does not get very cold either (60 degrees). We have replaced the control-defrost, adaptive timer, PC board and still had the same problem. I think it might be either the defrost heater kit or the thermostat for the defrost heater kit. My question is: 1. How can I troubleshoot before I buy these parts. 2. The copper tubing for the compressor is connected to the condenser and I am not sure how to pull the condenser out so that I can change out the defrost heater kit. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

Sounds like a defrost problem or a plugged drain... to get it to work temporary defrost the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator, open the door and get a blow dryer and warm up the freezer. wait until the water stop dripping out or about 12 to 24 hours and then you can plug it back in . it will work for 2 to 3 weeks.

To unplug the drain.defrost the freezer .remove the back cover. Use a pipe cleaner to clear the drain. pour a few cups of hot water down the drain.

The defrost systems is:
HEATER-DEFROST
THERMOSTAT-DEFROST
Adaptive defrost control
Start with the adaptive defrost control board. The fresh food section light switch and light bulb must work. To initiate a defrost cycle, open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds. The compressor and fans should shut off and the defrost heater should come on. Open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds to remove the refrigerator from the defrost mode and back into a cooling mode.
Frigidaire - referance model FSC23F7DSB3
This product comes equipped with an Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC). To activate manual defrost, press and hold the Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. A d in the freezer temperature window and F in the refrigerator temperature window will display when the heater is activated. To deactivate manual defrost, press and hold Freezer temperature UP (WARMER) key while pressing the Fresh Food temperature DOWN (COLDER) key 5 times within 6 seconds. d and F will be displayed until the defrost cycle is complete. (approx. 8 minutes)

Heater / Thermostat
You will have to remove the back panel of the freezer to check the heater for and thermostat for continuity. Heater are the lease likely part to go bad... I always change thermostat and timers together.
let me know if this helps or we can chat if you need more help.

If the defrost heating element, defrost timer or evaporater fan weren't working, you'd develop a block of ice on the evaporator. Is the compressor running? If it is, it might have bad valves from the frost buildup scenario. Liquid refrigerant could have gotten to the suction valves. The sealed system should have a five year warranty. Might be time to call a pro

Have you checked the coils and compressor for dust and debris buildup on the rear bottom of the unit? Are the fans running in the freezer section? Post back your findings.

Hi Gary,

If your evaporator is not completely frosting over (top to bottom) this normally means the unit doesn't have a proper charge or the compressor can't pump all the freon as it needs to. I would check the charge, this should read "0", if less not enough, if higher than the compressor is failing. I hope this helps.

Freezer side not freezing

Check for ice / frosting inside the freezer .... If present you probably have a defrost problem.... This causes the freezer coil to ice up and block the air flow ... the causes could be a bad defrost heater , defrost timer, defrost sensors, or control board. Also make sure that the condenser coil is clean. remove ALL dust with a vacuum and a coil brush .the coil is located either on the bottom or on the back side of the unit... You didn't give the Make and model #

Most problems with side by sides frosting up is due to failure of the defrost heater in the bottom of the freezer section behind the panel inside.

Frigidaire side by side freezer - LOUD noise...

It sounds like the evaporator fan is hitting ice that is built up on the evaporator coil. When it's making the noise, open the freezer door and see if it stops.
(Most models are wired so that the evaporator fan cuts off when the freezer door is open.)
Check the inside back, lower panel of the freezer for ice built up or frost on it. If there is, you have a defrost problem that is most likley a bad heater. It's located around the coil inside the freezer behind the panel you will be looking at. The defrost problem would explain the freezer not freezing ice cream.

Whirlpool Gold freezes up to frige side

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Frigidaire upright model #MFU20F3GW8- Food not freezing

Check and clean the air cooled condenser for dust and dirt. Check and make sure the fan in back, on the bottom behind a removable panel, is operating. After cleaning the condenser replace the panel.
Also you stated there is no frost anywhere. Did you check the back wall of the freezer for frost buildup. If not check it and if there is frost there your defrost system is not working and the frost has stopped air circulation.

My Frigidaire side-by-side fridge (model: FRS24XGCW2) never reach freezing temperature in freezer though both side are colder than room temperature. The compressor and fan keep working forever.

1. Check and clean the condenser where system heat is transfered to the air. Located in back behind removable panel, after cleaning make sure you re-install the panel for proper air circulation.

2. Check the back wall of the freezer for ice or frost. If you have frost buildup on the back wall you have a defrost system problem. This would be lated to the timer, heaters, or defrost thermostat.

Ice in the bottom of frigidaire side by side frost proof freezer

take all the bottom shelves and baskets out of the freezer. look at the back wall of the freezer. youll see a block of ice in a metal pan looking part at the bottom of the rear panel. there is a hole in the bottom of that pan. thats the defrost drain. its clogged. use a hair dryer to get all the ice out then use hot water to flush out the drain hole.
