Hello,

I think you did not step on the turtle very well before releasing the clutch, that's why it cuts off.

So, while you step on the clutch, match your turlte a bit, before releasing the clutch and you should gradually realease the clutch while you step on the turtle.

This problem is a minor one.

Take care.

My Craftsman 42" lawn tractor

I would suggest checking your owner's manual. There is a leveling process and my Craftsman wasn't leveled at the factory. Once I leveled mine, it cut fine. If you can't find it in your manual, google leveling craftsman mower deck.

You didn't indicate what model number you have. You can download a manual here:http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/21205/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn,-Tractor-L0306104?brand_name_search=917272672+CRAFTSMAN if the 917272672 isn't the right model go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter you model number. When the parts come up look over on right had side of page for button to select manual. To start, you must have foot on clutch, PTO disengaged. The seat switch doesn't come into play until the PTO is engaged. Check for voltage at the B terminal on the start switch to be sure fuse is good. From there check the S terminal when you turn key to start. From there it goes to the clutch/brake switch (when depressed) then to pto clutch then to solenoid. GOOD LUCK!

Cuts out when I let out the clutch

try and find a relay, near the engine, which is connected to the safety switches attached to the seat and clutch/brake pedal. you may find that relay to be bad, or you need to replace or short the safety switches. If you short them, might be a safety issue as the engine and blades will run unattended. Seems to be a very common problem with craftsman lawn tractors.

Craftsman 14.5 hp 42" cutting grass just fine depressed clutch engine stopped can't start turns over just fine have spark & gas

Make sure that you have 12vdc at the carb solenoid. If you do, next check your compression. You can do this with a compression gauge or by taking the spark plug out and placing your thumb over the hole and turning over the engine. If you are building compression it will blow your finger off the hole. If not check your valves to make sure they have the right clearance.
