Printer smears l h side of envelope Not in printed area

The problem you are experiencing is caused by the way the text is formatted in most word processing documents. By default envelopes are printed not in black, but a dark gray. This confuses the printer and causes it to use the color cartridge to process gray instead of using the black cartridge. You can fix this problem with one of 2 ways.
Please select the "Black" only option following the steps given below:
1. Click on "Start," "Control Panel" and click on "Printers and Faxes."
2. Right click on the "Lexmark printer icon" and select "Properties."
3. Select "Printing Preferences," click on the "Quality/Copies" tab and choose "Print Color images in Black and White."
4. Select "OK."
You can also change the color of your text to a true black in your word processor. This will require you to resort to the word processor's documentation and help files.
Both of these settings will cause your printer to use the black cartridge instead of the color. If either one of these solutions solves your problem, it means your color cartridge needs to be cleaned or replaced. If you feel that the color cartridge should not be out of ink please try the following:
1. Go to the "Lexmark solution center." This can be done by clicking on "Start," go to "Programs" and Lexmark printer group. Click on the "Lexmark Solution center." Next click on the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Clean and Fix Horizontal streaks." This will produce a printed page.
The colors that you should see here are black, yellow, magenta (a reddish purple) and cyan (a dark sky blue). You should notice the diagonal lines above and below the solid horizontal lines. These diagonal lines should be solid from left to right with no gaps.
If there are gaps in the lines or the print diminishes across the page, you should run the "Clean Print Nozzle" page a couple more times to try and clear it up. If you still have gaps at the top and bottom, you should "wick" the cartridges by following the steps given below:
1. Please open the "Solution center" again and go to the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Install color/black cartridge" and remove the cartridge or cartridges from the printer.
3. Get a damp paper towel.
4. Set the ink cartridge right side up on the damp paper towel so that the ink nozzles are against the towel and hold the cartridge in this position for about 15 seconds.
5. Now wipe the print head (on the bottom where the ink comes out) across in one direction only (left to right) until it looks clean.
6. Next dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure that the ink is flowing.
7. Snap the cartridges back into the printer.
8. On your computer, select "Old Cartridge install."
9. Repeat the "Clean Nozzle Page" one more time. If this fails to address the problem the entire procedure may need repeating.

Why do my copies come out so light?

I found that I had to adjust the settings or my copies were almost illegible. Instead of copying at greyscale or black & white, try setting for color copies (even if using a black & white laser printer) and 600 dpi. It takes a few seconds longer to scan, but you get very clear copies that way.

I Need to Print

Sadly in a word, 'No'.

Here is the exact answer from Brother:

Your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations
(printing from the pc, printing received faxes and printing copies or reports) when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suction air from the dry cartridge and damage the printhead. Even if you print in black only or change the print settings to MONO or GRAYSCALE to avoid printing in color, the programmed cleaning cycles would still suction the dry cartridge, because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles.

The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge or cartridges.

While memory is available, black and white faxes will continue to be received into memory. If a color fax is being received, the Brother machines HANDSHAKE will request the fax be sent as black and white fax.

All faxes received into memory will automatically print once the ink cartridge is replaced.

NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.

Black Horizontal lines

hi!

Horizontal white lines usually indicate the ink cartridge is running out of ink or has some clogged ink nozzles. Try the following steps:
  1. Some of the ink cartridge ink nozzles may be clogged with dry ink. Use the ink cartridge cleaning service to try to clear them. Follow the steps below:
    1. check if there is plain white paper in the Input tray.
    2. Press Setup .
    3. Press < or >to select Tools and then press OK .
    4. Press < or > to select Clean Print Cartridge and then press OK . The unit prints a test page.
    5. Examine the test page. If the print quality of the page is good, stop here. If the print quality appears to be getting better, run the Clean Print Cartridge utility again
  2. If the self test appears better, Increase the copy quality setting (Normal or Best) and try copying again. If the quality is still poor, continue to the next step.
  3. If the quality is still poor, one or more of the cartridges may be low on ink or empty. Follow the steps below to check the ink levels.
    1. Open HP Solution Center .
    2. Click Settings .
    3. Click Print Settings .
    4. Click Printer Toolbox .
    5. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.
    6. Replace any ink cartridge that is low on ink.
  4. If the ink levels are not low, clean the cartridge face and electrical contacts at the back of the print carriage.
    1. Open the front of the unit to access the ink cartridges.
    2. After the ink cartridges are at the center, unplug the power cord from the back of the unit, and remove the ink cartridges. The power cord must be removed to ensure that the unit is not damaged during the cleaning process.
    3. Clean the cross-hatched area of the ink cartridge with a soft clean cloth that is slightly dampened with clean water to remove any build up. Avoid cleaning the ink cartridge nozzle plate. Cleaning this area can force foreign matter into the ink nozzles and plug them
    4. With a soft lint free cloth slightly dampened with clean water, clean the copper-colored contacts on the back of the ink cartridges.
    5. Allow the cartridges to dry before reinserting them.
    6. Close the unit, and plug the power cord back in.
    7. Print a self-test page to check the results. Follow the steps below to print a self-test page.
      1. Press Setup .
      2. Press <or > until Print Report displays and then press OK .
      3. Press < or > until Self-Test Report displays and then press OK . The self-test report prints.
    8. If the problem is not corrected by cleaning the ink cartridges, replace the ink cartridge(s).
- hope it will help to resolve you problem...

Brother MFC-440CN won't print color

Did you use generic carts?

Do use only original brother ink carts!
Only these have special cleaning fluids mingled with the ink.

There are several advantages, too:

You can run a special cleaning mode (DO insert original carts at first!!!)

Press menue then start bk copy then fourtimes arrow-up.
machine should switch to maintenance mode (buttons will flash).
press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk copy. machine will refresh ink within the tubes and the print head and run a special cleaning routine. when finished press 7 then 6 then 3 then start bk copy to run a power cleaning. leave the maintenance mode by pressing 9 then 9.

The machine should print without proböems. If there is a poor quality left, the printhead is affected by bad ink and cant be fixed anymore.

My printed and copied pictures have horozontal lines

White lines through copies White lines can appear on a copy in either a horizontal or vertical direction. How the white line appears on the copy will determine the cause and solution. Horizontal lines Horizontal white lines usually indicate the ink cartridge is running out of ink or has some clogged ink nozzles. Try the following steps: 1. Some of the ink cartridge ink nozzles may be clogged with dry ink. Use the ink cartridge cleaning service to try to clear them. Follow the steps below: 1. Verify that there is plain white paper in the Input tray. 2. Press Setup. 3. Press or to select Tools and then press OK. 4. Press or to select Clean Print Cartridge and then press OK. If the quality is still poor, one or more of the cartridges may be low on ink or empty. Follow the steps below to check the ink levels. 1. Open HP Solution Center. 2. Click Settings. 3. Click Print Settings. 4. Click Printer Toolbox. 5. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. Figure 1: Estimated ink levels - both cartridges low NOTE: You can also open the Printer Toolbox from the Print Properties dialog box. In the Print Properties dialog box, click the Features tab and then click Printer Services button then click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. Figure 2: Cleaning the ink cartridge 1 - Clean in the cross-hatched area only 2 - Do not touch the nozzle plate 3 - Clean the copper-colored contacts 4. 1. Press Setup. 2. Press or until Print Report displays and then press OK. 3. Press or until Self-Test Report displays and then press OK. The self-test report prints. 5. If the problem is not corrected by cleaning the ink cartridges, replace the ink cartridge(s). Vertical lines Vertical white lines usually indicate the scanner did not calibrate correctly. This can be caused by debris on the scanner glass or white reference pad. Try the following steps: 1. Turn off the HP all-in-one product and unplug the power cord. 2. Open the document cover to access the scanner glass. 3. Using a non abrasive glass cleaner, thoroughly clean the scanner/copier glass, and white lid backing on the inside of the top cover. CAUTION: Spray the cleaner onto the cloth. Never spray fluids directly onto the HP all-in-one product. 4. Plug in the power cord and turn on the HP all-in-one. Let me know what happens, Good Luck, Tim
