Question about Refrigerators
I have an upright frost free fridge/freezer. The fan keeps stopping & starting sometimes only for a few seconds at a time going on off on off. I have cleaned it and got rid of the ice that was there and left it switched off for a few hours, but when I switched it back on it was still happening. I then cleaned the back of the freezer and noticed that there is some water in a plastic bit, on top of the motor, and that there is some white stuff a bit like melted polystyrene coming out of the bottom of the freezer just above where this plastic bit with water is. The motor also feels quite hot. What should I do to try and stop the fan going on and off.
IF THE PLASTIC CUP WHERE YOU FOUND THE WATER IS IN THE BACK WALL OF THE FRESH FOOD COMPARTMENT, THAT IS WHERE THE DEFROST WATER EXITS THE REFRIGERATOR AND GOES DOWN THE DRAIN TUBE INTO THE DRAIN PAN. IF THE WATER IS TRAPPED UP IN THE CUP, THERE IS A RESTRICTION IN THE DRAIN. IF THERE IS A BACKUP OF WATER IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT, IT COULD HAVE REACHED THE DOOR SWITCH. ON COME MODELS, THE DOOR SWITCH NOT ONLY TURNS ON THE LIGHT, BUT ALSO TURNS OFF THE FAN WHEN THE DOOR IS OPENED. IF THE SWITCH IS CONTAMINATED WITH WATER, IT MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
IF THE MOTOR IS HOT TO TOUCH, IT MAY ALSO NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE BEARINGS MAY HAVE WORN OUT AND CAUSED THE FAN TO QUIT.
