My Homelite chain saw will not start. It appears to be a fuel system problem. When I looked in the fuel tank, the fuel filter had fallen off and there were to open lines. i do not know when these go, and which line gets the fuel filter. Any help, Thanks.

The line at the back of the tank gets the filter (check it for plugging) and the one nearest the cap doesn't use a filter (it is the return line from the primer bulb). The filtered line goes directly to the carburetor inlet port and the outlet port allows fuel to be pulled through the carburetor and out to the primer port. Check and replace any fuel lines that are in poor condition. If the engine has been running with the intake filter missing, the interior of the carburetor may be full of debris. There could be a problem with either the fuel line going to the carb or the impulse line that's connected from the cylinder base that generates the 'pulsing' action that operates the diaphragm fuel pump. Today's alcohol rich gasoline has a tendency to weaken or even rot the rubber lines causing fuel delivery issues.
If you don't use your saw for extended periods, dump the tank empty then start the engine and run the residual gasoline from the line. This will help extend the life of the fuel lines.
Another possibility could be a blocked fuel filter, but that is remote.
There should be a oil adjusting screw on the bottom of your saw next to the bar beside the oil tank. Some models actually has the screw inside the tank. Drain the tank to make sure there isn't any debris clogging the hole where the oil feeds to the bar.
One way to check to see if the bar is oiling is:
1. Start the saw 2. Put a board, piece of cardboard or an uncolored old shirt in front of the bar 3. Press the trigger on the saw to allow the chain to circulate around the bar. 4. While keeping constant pressure on the trigger, look to see if there is a vertical line of oil on the piece of material you have placed on front of the bar. If the saw is oiling you will have a vertical line. If not adjust the oil set screw accordingly.
Homelite uses a porous bronze plug in the tank case for a vent. Any open holes should have fuel lines in them--one to feed the carburetor and which has the fuel filter in the tank interior. The other is a return line from the primer bulb that allows fuel that is pumped through the carburetor, into the primer pump, and from there return the pumped excess back to the tank. Be sure to use original rubber lines for replacement, not plastic. Hope this helps!
Before adjusting anything, check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the condition of the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Tighten all carburetor fasteners. Make sure you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Does the primer bulb pull fresh fuel into itself when pumped? Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out CCW 1-1/2 turns each. This is a basic setting and should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow it to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Adjust H needle CW until the engine starts to speed up, but still 4-stroking. Proper final adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW for fairly good idle, but still allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine will continue to run. Hope this helps!

See the "Engine Internals" print. The oiler appears to above the clutch and driven by a pressurized tank. Venting the tank (opening the oil cap) may help help with weeping but only emptying the tank will stop it.
If no oil from engine oiler hole I suspect a failed hose or connection. Use the IPL to inspect and repair as needed.
Oil System Plugged.
Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution. Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out. Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability). Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up (oozes down side of saw). If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
Work your way through the linkage (use IPL to identify components and locations) cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections. Please take extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.

Why are you not standing on the help desk where you purchased this? If it starts to sputter then dies It is probably a plugged fuel tank vent. When it begins to act up roll the saw so the fuel cap is up right and loosen it a little. If it smooths out and runs correctly you just vented the tank and that is where the problem lies. If it suddenly stops running with no warning it is most likely an electrical problem. If you repair either of these problems it may void your warranty. Why not make Homelite repair or replace it? If offered a refund I would not purchase any product by the same manufacturer. At best their quality control is lacking. HTH
No-fuel problems are the result of bad fuel lines from inside the fuel tank out to the carburetor. If lines look good, rebuild the carburetor itself to repair hard, cracked diaphragms and varnish build-up.
