Missing files after using the recover CD

I used my Gateway recover CD to reset my computer to the original setup and I found I couldn't see all files in my LaCie external drive even I could see the storage files size from the Hard Drive property.

What can i do to get to the recovery screen on my gateway desktop, its model is SX2110G-UW24?

I pulled this from the Gateway manual for your machine. It is a generic guide. If this doesn't work, you may not have a recovery partition on your hard drive and should have made recovery disks when originally getting the unit. Good Luck!

From the Gateway Manual......

Recovering from the hard drive during startup:
To reinstall Windows and all pre-installed software and drivers:
1. Turn on your computer, then press Alt+F10 during startup. Gateway
Recovery Management opens.
2. Click on Restore system from factory default.
Caution: Continuing the process will erase all files on your hard
drive.
3. Click on Next. Your hard drive's original, factory-loaded contents are
recovered. This process will take several minutes.

You can order a new set of disks from the manufacturer or pull out the had drive and plug it into another PC or buy an external hard drive dock . Newegg has them for around $20

You need to have a working Windows CD Installer to resolve this corrupt issue.

When you have the CD, load it while your computer is starting up, and then it will start to run the Windows setup program. Follow the on-screen instructions.

When you pressed the "r" key in the keyboard as detailed in the error message above, you will be prompted to start from drive C: or other drive. Press "1" to choose drive C then enter. If there is a password, then the previous owner might have setup a password for the drive.

when you are in drive C, a prompt like this appears:
C:\Windows> or C:\>
just type in the command chkdsk \r to do the actual disk repair. It is "chkdsk \r" => there is a space between k and \.

Try your luck.

what a pity! if you Windows is really just had a corrupt system file that caused it, try boot with this CD to recover bad sectors: "HDD Regenerator 1.51". This is also available in Hiren's BootCD.
By the way, what Antivirus you are using on the laptop? The cause of this may due to a Virus wrote a startup system file entry into the registry but your Antivirus picked up the file and removed it however not the action. That's why a file is "missing" upon reboot.
What you can do lastly is to take the harddrive out, put it into a external harddrive case, backup all your data from another PC, and reinstall Windows on the laptop.

Computer crashed?

Ouch, sorry to hear that, your os is corrupt, could be one of many reasons including a virus, or just a corrupt HD. Get the OS disk that came with your computer and reboot, make sure to boot the DVD/CD not the HD, start the install process, you will eventually get to point where you can select to do a repair, choose that and see if it will recover, if it does you shouldnt lose anythig, but you will need to reload some drivers and an update.

No Operating System; Cannot Format User Partition - Gateway MX595

Hi,

It seems that you have a corrupt user partition on your drive which is stopping you from doing a recovery.

What you will need to do is delete the partition(s) on your Gateway by using a system repair utility CD. ERD Commander 2005 or Bart are utilites that will allow you to boot from a CD and then delete the partitions.

You could also use a friend's Windows XP CD just to delete the partitions.

Once this is done, you should be able to re-install your OS (assuming there is no physical damage on the hard disk.

Hope this helps.
