These kinds of problems almost always require opening and inspecting the gearbox. Hopefully if you can do this is will be something simple you can repair. Good luck.

Pony size Troy-Bilt 30 years old\r\nQuestion; Can motor be replaced?

Yes but unless you purchase a engine with the two shafts, one for forward and one for reverse, you will lose your reverse. If you don't mind not having a reverse just go to a nearby Harbor Freight store or order on line a Greyhound 6.5 HP engine. these are Honda clones and run great they just had a sale here in Columbia Mo. and it was on sale for $99.99. I have used these on many of the Troy Bilt Horse tillers and they work great. They have metric threads and you may not be able to use your throttle cable but for the price you can't beat it.

1980 pony rear tine tiller: when I put it into gear it just sits there and will suddenly lurch ahead uncontrollably.

That will happen when the tines are engaged while the wheels are in Neutral as the tines simply drive the whole machine forward without the drag of the wheels being in gear. If the wheel transmission is engaged and this is still happening, then you have need for repair.

Reverse belt or transmission won't lock into place

The reverse on the Pony tiller will not lock. You pull back on the reverse lever and as soon as you let go it will stop. This is normal operation for reverse.

Troy-bilt tiller

The only way to roll around is to remove the pins on the axle and slide the wheels in and replace the pins. If this has never been done sometime its rather hard to do. Hope this will help

When going forward the tines are going in reverse

I've never seen one of these so excuse my ignorance. Is it possible that the cable to change from forward to reverse is out of adjustment? Can you go to where the cable attaches to the shifting mechanism, detach it and manually try to change from reverse to forward? Hope this helps. Good luck!

I just bought a used Pony tiller. It runs good, but after tilling for a couple no hours the forward and tines just stopped. Had not hit anything. It goes in reverse and the tines work in reverse, but I...

Check under the metal or plastic cover just behind the engine. This covers the forward and reverse belts. Your belt either broke, jumped off fthe pulley, or needs a tension adjustment.

Tiller will not till in forward motion.

sounds like your drive belt is worn or the handle bar adjustment is too tall and your handle is not adjusted.
