Regarding it's wireless capabilities, are there any known conflicts with Windows 7?

Connect Wirelessly on SBG900

Hello Friends!

Amongst the DOCSIS 2.0 compatible cable modems that I have worked with - from the end user perspective - this is one of the best to work with. Not that there are any that are that great, but of cable modems, the feature set is more robust than most of the others I have used. With built-in wireless capability, firewall support, port-mapping, MAC address ACL, WEP and WPA, sadly, these features make it more advanced than most devices of this category. This is probably due to the cable industry dragging its feet in embracing much of an industry-wide technology standard.

Enough preaching.

You're in luck. Out of the box, this device will start broadcasting its default wireless network (named "Motorola"). The built-in DHCP server will be enabled, network security will be disabled and you should be able to join the wireless LAN, receive an IP address from the DHCP server and connect immediately.

As for the Comcast techs, I disclaim first that I have never had to speak with them. I have worked with reps from TWC, Adelphia and Cox. If Comcast outsources much of its call center work to companies like USA Telepresence, as Time Warner Cable has been known to do, you will have to go through, on average, a series of four tier one customer service representatives before you get one who will A) actually want to help you and B) know that they can't help you but will actually need to transfer you to a tier two technician who will need to provision your new device.

It's sad, but true. Calling customer service these days is a crapshoot. So keep rolling the dice until you get a good rep who will ask you for two pieces of information: the MAC ID for the Motorola SBG900 (you want to give them the one on the label on base stand of the device that is titled "HFC MAC ID") and the make/model of the device.

The good news is, once you get tier two tech, they are generally well-trained, intelligent, and motivated to get your problem solved. Just let them know the basics of your sitch, and if you feel confident you know what you're talking about, let them know that you just need them to provision your new cable modem.

Hope this helps!
