Question about PC Desktops

I have Lotus 1-2-3 release 3.4 installed on a computer running Windows 2000 and all of a sudden I can't print any of my spreadsheet. I reinstalled the software and it still won't print. All my other DOS programs print fine. Any suggestions? Best regards, Marc S. Ciampa

It is the default printer, any other suggestions

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

I have been emailed solutions from Benimur, Coolguy008 and Ekse and I can't access them. Can someone make this site more user friendly.

    Thanks,

    Marc

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

Yes it's print a test page and the printer works fine with all my other DOS and Windows based programs

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

This is a DOS based Lotus 1-2-3 spread sheet program that I've been using for years. I developed Macros that are incompatible with the Lotus upgrades so upgrading the software is not an option. Thanks for the help

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

Thank you Benimur for your time. To answer your questions I'll list them in order

    1. Yes, it's connected to LPT1.

    2. I have no idea how to configure the CMOS/BIOS. How do I proceed with this.

    3. There are no pipe characteristics embedded in the print range

4.None of the cells are hidden.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

I've done everything I capable of including deleting and reinstalling the software but to no avail.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

Nothing has changed since the last time I printed. No upgrades or the addition of any new hardware or software.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

The printer has always been the default printer. Thank you

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

Still no luck getting this to work

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

    Thanks Benimur,

I replaced the printer cable along with the changing the BIOS settings and still can't print. This is becoming frustrating as hell.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

Printer is connected to LPT1 port

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

    Sriramojou,

I deleted the software and then reinstalled with the same results. I even went through the trouble of installing the software on another computer in my office and it printed fine.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

    Basti,

I tried everything you recommended and still nothing.

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

    Basti,

I've tried printing differerent spreadsheets and nothing, there are no error messages and when I go to dir>lpt1 it prints all the directories

  • MCiampa Apr 10, 2008

    The Machine,

I've removed and reintalled the printer, printed a test page, but can still can not print out of Lutus.

Thee are no error messages at all.

Printer is not picking up the job from the computer when printing from Lotus.

And it prints from the command prompt test.

  • MCiampa Apr 11, 2008

Thank you The Machine but it still won't print. My only solution is to delete this software from my computer and install it on a spare unit I have in another office.

    Best Regards,

    Marc

  • MCiampa Apr 14, 2008

    Ekse,

Yes I can print a test page and yes, the printer works fine. The reason I use this old version of Lotus is because I have developed many complicated Macros over the years that are not compatible with the Windows based lotus programs

  • MCiampa Apr 14, 2008

Thank you The Machine for all the time you have spent helping me out. I tried the printfil software and really didn't get anywhere so I deleted Lotus Software from this computer and reinstalled it on a spare unit.

    Best Regards,

    Marc

Not sure if I saw an answer for this earlier question. Aside from your program settings, how is your printer plugged into your pc? USB, Parallel, Serial, etc...? Please don't rate this question yet :)

When you print on the Lotus program are you using a dos program or the application itself from windows screen?
If from application from window, try file print and select printer model or Port setting if applicable, if from DOS try changing the port setting on printers and faxes to COM1 to free the LPT port.

Just for troubleshooting purposes....

But if you can print from other application without changing any setup, there is something you need to configure on the application or on lotus application.. .

Try using the generic text only driver as well by adding it from the Add printer wizard...

and LPT ports on bios should be set as bidirectional or ECP but i dont think it has somethng to do with the bios setup...

Go to command prompt: type dir >lpt1 then click on enter, it should print something. if its not printing something is blocking LPT port, a device or an application. set bios to ECP for LPT and check printer port setting under propertied if its set to lpt1- unchecked the enable bidirectional support box click on apply, make sure from the back of computer its plug in to LPT1( printer). try to print.

Can you think of anything that would have changed around the time it stopped working? Did you upgrade printer driver? Did you add another printer?

Did you try removing and re-adding the printer so that it picks up default settings?

Do you get an error in 1-2-3 when you try to print or does it just go through the motions and "thinks" it printer?

Any errors in Windows when you try to print?

Have you tried watching the printer's print queue while trying to print to see if it gets a job?

Are there any print settings in 1-2-3? Something like print emulation type or port number?

Try opening a command printer (type cmd in the run dialog) and typing this at the prompt (without quotes): "dir c:\ > lpt1" this should print your root directory contents to the printer connected to lpt1. If this also doesn't work then something is intercepting your lpt1 commands.

  • Dean Joly

Did you try my command prompt test above?

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Apr 10, 2008

Ok, Windows, printer, driver, and system wise everything seems to be in order then. The only thing I can see to be a problem is Lotus 1-2-3. When you reinstalled did you delete all traces of it from your hard drive? There must be a configuration file somewhere that is corrupted that is not getting refreshed when you reinstall.

Otherwise scan through all the configuration option from within 1-2-3 or any .cfg, .ini, .txt files in it's folders to see if you can find a missing link or a bad configuration.

If all other Dos and windows printing is working then everything should be in order, the only variable that is not common to all other things is Lotus.

You could back up all your data, reinstall Windows, drivers, software and start over again.

Hi Marc,

Is the printer connected to the desktop PC using LPT1/Parallel and not USB?

If yes and all your DOS programs print fine, you may need to alter the settings of the LPT1 in your CMOS/BIOS configurations/setup. Choices are ECP, EPP, Normal. Pls try all settings and determine if a particular one will work for you.

Additionally, pls verify that no pipe character(s) are embedded somewhere in the range you would want printed. To my recollection, Lotus 1-2-3 suppresses the printing of a row/cell if the first character is a pipe character/vertical bar (|), the vertical bar probably won't be visible in the worksheet grid; look at the cell address along the top of the window.

Alternately, to verify whether the cells/range are hidden or not, highlight all of the cells in question, right-click and select "Range Properties" (from the pop-up menu), click on the "Security tab" (key icon) and verify that there is no check mark in the Hide Cell Contents checkbox.

Hope this be of additional help/idea. Pls post back for any development(s) (or even the lack of it) or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Bear with me, have you tried replacing the printer cable? I know that
the printer works with all your other programs but pls try.

If that doesn't work, try re configuring your LPT1 port settings in the CMOS/BIOS - on most desktop PCs, pressing DEL key immediately after powering up would lead you to the CMOS/BIOS configuration page. Among the different settings would be one for the Parallel/LPT1. Though there may be a number configurations, you need only change the ECP, EPP, Normal, ECC + EPP choices. After selecting one, save and exit, reboot and run your Lotus 1-2-3. try printing. You may perhaps need to try/cycle through all choices until one works for you.

    Cheers.

Hi,

You can try this open up the word fille and then:
Tools --> Options --> Security Tab. Remove the check before "Warn before printing, saving, or sending a file that contains tracked changes or comments."

For excel do this:
Tools --> Options --> Security Tab. Remove the check before "Read-Only Recommended."

another thing is please update your software.this usually fixes the problem.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

How do i install lotus123 ver 9.8.2 on windows 7 pro computer

I do not know which version of lotus you have, but it is very doubtful it will run on a Windows 7 system which is a 16/32 bit system. Wikipedia says that up to release 4 it ran under DOS, Release 5 was for windows 3.1, 97 edition ran on Windows 95 and millenium edition 98 released in 2002 was the last edition. If you have 97 edition or later it MIGHT run, but better probably to get a copy of Excel.

Recover or Reset Windows Password from a Windows Password Key CD

After you have tried your several passwords you till can’t log in Windows system, you begin to cry,Does any body can help me!There aren’t anybody around you,you are waiting the computer work normally as there are much work need to do right away!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to reinstall the system. We’ll show you how to recover or reset your Windows password from a Windows Password Key CD.

This method works for all of the version of Windows-anything from Windows 2000 and later, basically. And yes, that includes Windows 7.
You’ll need:
1> a blank CD disk or USB flash drive.
2> a computer that can download from Internet .
3> a program that can recover Windows password-Windows Password Key

If you have a Windows Password Key CD,you can go to recover your lost windows password,Or you need to see the follow part which shows how to create a Windows Password Key CD.

Step 1:Free Download Windows Password Key 8.0 from the official website .

Step 2:Run the downloaded file to install. You can install it on any PC you have access to.

Step 3:Burn the program to a blank CD

It is easy to make a Windows Password Key CD,next,we’ll use the CD to reset Windows System.

1. Insert the newly created CD/USB to the locked computer.
2. Reboot the locked computer and press'F2'or'Delete'to enter your BIOS setup and then you will see the instruction as following.
3. Then you need to reboot the computher,Finally you will find your password has been removed.

Now you can regain access your Windows operating system and create a new administrator password. The best thing of using this method is that you shouldn't lose any data on your computer. Furthermore, If you can't find a computer which has a CD/DVD writer or the locked computer have no a CD-ROM, You can burn the ISO image file into a USB flash drive and use the USB flash drive to recover your Windows administrator password.
Try these three methods the next time you have lost Windows administrator password, which you do not need to reinstall Windows system for getting back to Windows by removing lost or forgotten password.

Will lotus 123 load from a cd on windows 8

you have to create a batch file to run Lotus 1-2-3, and (so far as I can tell) you have to run the program from your root drive, because the program makes its calls TO the root drive. Here's the batch program you create in Notepad or other plain-text editor:

cd\
cd\lotus
123.exe
cd\
exit

* Delete the 'exit' if you want the window to stay open as a DOS window, after you're done with the program. Save the file with a '.bat' extension. (Note: unlike XP, you can close the window with your mouse, afterwards.)

* After creating that file, you have to right click on the file name, select 'Properties (in Win8, Vista, XP) and do some more tweaking. The Properties dialogue box SHOULD show the following tabs: General, Shortcut, Options, Font, Layout, Colors, Compatibility. Each of these needs editing.

GENERAL tab: select Normal Window or even Maximized (though it won't actually maximize). Also in Win8, click on Advanced, and 'Run as administrator'.
OPTIONS tab: select Large cursor. You can always change it, but since the program really won't run fullscreen, you'll want the cursor to be oversized, since the window will be smaller and will shrink everything in it.
FONT tab: this is what Windows uses to select the screen size, despite all the other settings (which you also still need to set). In Win7, you have three types of fonts to set. Click on the 'Bold' option, as that makes the text easier to read.
For True Type 'Consolas' font (which results in a more square window), pick a font size between 18 and 24. More than that will be bigger than your entire monitor screen, when you actually run the program (looks are deceiving, you have to test the results with trial and error).
For True Type Lucida Console font, use the same 18-24 font size range, but the screen will be much shallower and wider, so you can afford to decrease font size to 18-20. 28 is really too wide, on a widescreen monitor (1366x768 pixels). But maybe you'll like it, or your monitor will accommodate that size. Mine wouldn't.

For Raster fonts, 12 x 16 is the optimal setting. ON some (i.e., Dell Ultrasharp) monitors, Raster fonts look best. On my Toshiba 19L4200U TV monitor, the Lucida Consule setting is clearest.
LAYOUT tab: Pick a window size width no greater than 85, and height no greater than 38. Then test to see if it's too big. If yes, you'll also need to decrease font size, as well as the Layout size, here. Experiment, because you can't gauge the right mix of window and font size, just by the diagrams in the dialogue box.

COLORS tab: Lotus 1-2-3 makes hardware calls on the screen, so whatever you put in this tab, it will ignore. But other DOS programs might 'obey' the colors you set here. If you remember the old Norton Utilities days of setting Mode, etc., that's what this is.

COMPATIBILITY tab: You can't set resolution to override at 640x480. The setting is either ignored, or your monitor will freak out. For Lotus 1-2-3, in Win 8 I didn't need to turn on the 'compatibility mode'. It made no difference in the results. (You don't need it in XP, either.)
* Finally, you have to find the program itself, then right-click on the program name and edit its Properties. Here, that program is 123.exe, and it has to be in your root directory. (All the program files Lotus will use, must be there; at least one wk1 file must be in C:\123 at startup. I'm sure this can be tweaked, but I'm using the default Lotus program settings for a typical installation.)

Depending on what windows you're running the best solution I've used is to install a prior version of windows preferably windows 2000 or Windows 98 I find its easier to format because there is less programs to install. Hope this helps =)

Can't reinstall printer- ''print spooler is not working''

If you have the windows disk for it , Save everything important to disks.  Put WIndows  disk into machine and tell it to install. It will find you version and ask if you wish to repair it, Say yes.   If you have Xp pro just "Restore" computer to the date before the problem started. If you have neither one. Save you work and then reinstall everything using your backup disks.

I agree with ProusunPal, check your settings.
If you are using Vista, check to see if it is compatable and if you have the correct driver.
Try reinstalling the drivers, but I think the first suggetion will resolve your issue.
I hope this helps.

I have installed Windows XP on my computer where I did have Windows 2000. I want to continue using the XP & uninstall the 2000 - how do I do that?

If you installed XP over 2000, you don't need to uninstall 2000, but If you installed it parallel to 2000, and you have an option to run 2000, and XP when the computer boots, you cannot uninstall 2000 without wiping the Hard Drive and reinstalling from scratch.

If the version of XP that you installed is an upgrade, you will likely have to wipe the hard drive, then install 2000, then run the upgrade install of XP after, but choose to overwrite the 2000 install.
