One is to go to the manufacturer's website (Gateway), and look at the Specifications.
Knowing what Processor you have, will determine what processor socket you have.

Gateway made three versions of the DX4640 series.
1) DX4640-UB101A
2) DX4640-UB201A
3) DX4640-UBC01A

http://support.gateway.com/support/supinfo/index.asp?pg=2&file=DX4640Models.html

The UB101A comes with an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200. (2.2GHz)
Uses an LGA 775 processor socket,

The UB201A, and the UBC01A come with an Intel Core2 Duo E4700. (2.6GHz)
Also uses an LGA 775 processor socket,

Information on the LGA 775 processor socket,

Two, you can also find out by of course, Right-clicking on My Computer>Properties, and viewing what is listed for the Processor.
Then look the processor up online, and see what it uses for a processor socket.

Three, you can download either Belarc Advisor, or CPU-Z (From CPUID.com), for free, and see a host of information about the hardware inside your computer.

Free tiny, tiny, programs that do not have any malware attached, nor will send spam to your email.

Should you need info about how to download, and install either Belarc Advisor, or CPU-Z, just state so in a Comment.

Where to connect power switch on Gateway DX4640

is this attached to the front panel inside the computer? if so attach the other end of the cable to half of an 8pin connector-that fits or a 4 pin connector of the right sized on the bottom of the motherboard.
