Hello,
the fan could have a weak coil that is ability to run fast or the capacitor is leaky, if found to be bad replace with a new one of the same rating..
Hope this will help...

From the looks of the fan it would be in the ceiling canopy cover.

THE FAN DOES NOT WORK

Since this is a low end fan from Home Depot I can only guess. If it has a remote, you probably need a new receiver in the fan.

The whinning in the motor is starting to go bad. You will have to replace either the motor or buy a new fan depending on the price you want to spend

Hampton Bay Stopped Suddenly while running

The motor may just need a good blowing out. If you can remove the fans motor and use compressed ait it can be cleaned thoroughly. First tun the motor by hand to see if it spins freely. It may have a dried up bearing locking up the fans shaft to the motor causing it to have stop. YThe bearings have a flat colored seal which can be popped off to relube then snap the seal back in

Hampton Bay San Marino 36" Ceiling Fan

18 gauge is a little light... should use 14. Are you sure it is a hum, or is it possibly the fan resonating due to imbalance of the blades. Watch to see if the fan is oscillating when it runs. Also, does changing the speed affect the frequency of the hum. If this is the case, you have to balance the blades using metal shims.
