Take the belt and apply axle-grease to it alllll over. apply large amounts of grease to each pully - and then just slide it on.

Absolutely NEVER apply grease to a belt or the pulleys to install a belt. If you do, you will ruin the belt because the grease will make the belt continuously slip on the pulleys rather than grip them so they will turn.

I have a Cub Cadet LT1050 and have taken the mower deck off to sharpen or replace blades as needed over the years. When the blades are sharp and replaced on the deck, I reconnect the deck to the tractor. After struggling with the same issue the first couple times, I discovered a simple solution built into the tractor which is explained below.

I am assuming the belt to which you refer is the deck drive belt which turns the blades. If so, look on the top of the deck and you will see a number of pulleys that the belt snakes around. At least one of them is a tension pulley with a heavy spring attached to a post. The spring is there to provide tension on the belt when it is installed so that it actually spins the blades. Without that tension they won't spin. That same tension is the reason it is difficult to install the belt. The piece of metal the tension pulley is attached to should have a 3/8" hole in it which enables you to put a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar into it. You can then use the ratchet or breaker bar for leverage to relieve the tension on the spring so you can then easily slide the belt over the pulley. Once the belt is on the pulley, you simply remove the ratchet or breaker bar from the mower deck allowing the spring to apply tension on the belt and your all set.
