I just got a pixma 990 and opened the top with the latch,and now I can't close it!

We've installed a brand new printer cartridge and the picture quality is terrible. A color photo printed out as washed out gray tones with red stripes evenly spaced the length of the page.
The printer has been around longer than any of the employees and we do not have a manual.
Is there some way to clean the printer heads? If so, please describe the process.
