Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Fan runs but compressor won't start. Compressor tries to come on every couple of minutes, dimming lights when it does, then stops. The other unit starts and runs just fine. The problem started just lately; it has worked fine for years.

You could start by checking the capacitor. Then use an ohmmeter and check the fan windings. Hook one meter lead to com lead. Then hook the other meter lead to the run lead and then the start lead, reading the resistance each time. Then read from each to ground (compressor case). You could also use an ammeter to check the current draw when it starts. Hopefully it's just the capacitor.

Admiral HMG61139 21.1 cu ft Side-by side refrigerator, not cooling. clicking sound every few minutes. (sounds similar to oven thermostat or relay coming on).

Hello,

Thier is one of a couple things going on with your refrig.

The start relay on the compressor is bad so what your hearing is the overload thermostat tripping on and off and keeps trying to start the compressor

The fan motor by the compressor called the condenser fan motor is not running to cool the compressor so once and what you overload keep trying to start the compressor but its too hot to start

Finally the compressor is locked up and the overload still keeps trying to start it but its totally seazed and ain't going to run

I hope this helps you to determine what is wrong with your refrigerator,
Gene

Starts fine shuts off in couple minutes, shut off power re-start does same thing

Please help us by observing and giving us a few more details:

When the Air Conditioner first comes on, do you hear the compressor start up?
does the room air fan come on?

This time of year, the unit must not be in a very HOT environment, right?

Is it possibly it is too cool outside?--

Please give us some temperatures (in and out)

and listen for any other clues-- Like: A relay clicking -- or a compressor trying to start, but is stalled, or dimming of the lights, etc. etc.

We need more clues.

My freezer is not working properly with clicking sound.

The clicking sound is probably the compressor relay trying to start the compressor. When the lights dim, the compressor is trying to start and hence, pulling power from the rest of the unit. If the compressor has a start capacitor, that could possibly be the problem. If not, the compressor itself should be replaced.

Signs of a bad compressor or condenser

plug this unit into a receptacle with a lamp also in the recept. unit will try to start the lamp will dim for a couple seconds and go back bright unit wont start maybe fan but no comp. sit and watch a few minutes later lamp will go dim again then back to bright, this is a classic low tech way of confirming the comp is trying but not working possible bad run capacitor, much cheaper than new unit

Amana Prestige Ultra A/C compressor won't cycle on

When the compressor tries to come on is the fan motor running? If it is, then the compressor could possibly be bad or it can be just the capacitor that is bad. The compressor won't start if the capacitor is bad or doesn't have enough energy to help start the motor and it will also cause the lights to dim. If the comprssor was bad, in all likely hood the breaker would trip. You can do an ohms test on the compressor to determine that. If you have a meter that tests microferods, then you can test the capacitor as well. But if the fan motor doesn't come on as the compressor is trying to start, then check the contactor to see if it is not making good contact. I would check it just for arguments sake anyway. Also make sure that you are getting 220v to the unit as well. Good luck, hope this helps. Oh, you can also look at the capcitor and sometimes, they will puff up and look swollen when they go bad as well but not all the time.

Compressor wont start

It is probably a failed run capacitor for the compressor. Without the capacitor, the motor can't even try to run, but it will draw extreamly high amperage until it trips the thermal overload (avarage trip time 5-10sec) after it has a few second for the safety to cool off, it will try again. Either that or the compressor truly is seized

Compressor problem?

The buzzing is your compressor trying to start. It is going off on internal overload caused by heating up of the motor windings. If you have an amp meter you could check the amp draw of the comp against the locked rotor amps listed on the tag You could try to have someone test your run capacitor, which looks like a can. Could be round or oval with wires coming off it. Or try a hard start capacitor and relay to bust it loose if compressor rotor is stuck. If that doesn't do it the comp is bad.
