Akai pdp5016h....turns on with main power switch, goes to akai blue screenwarmer, tries momentarily to switch to video and shuts off but then flashes blue akai screenwarmer again, shuts off....does this in repetition involuntarily. see no popped capacitors...what gives? could it be a pcb issue or a problem with video board?

I SAW YOUR RESPONSE TO AN AKAI PLASMA 50" TV WHERE YOU ASKED QUESTIONS THAT DESCRIBE WHAT I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING WITH MY AKAI TV.
WHEN SWITCHED ON, THE POWER INDICATOR TURN GREEN WHILE THE TV SCREEN WARMS UP, THEN A CLICK SOUND, AND THE TV GOES OFF AGAIN WITH THE POWER INDICATOR BLINKING RED AND YELLOW.
WHEN THE PROBLEM INITIALLY STARTED, UNPLUGGING FROM THE MAINS AND PLUGGING AGAIN FIXED THE PROBLEM. BUT AFTER A WEEK OF DOING THIS, THE TV JUST DOESN'T COME UP ANYMORE?
CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM?

Does the screen turn on momentarily before it goes into standby mode? Do you hear clicking noise before it goes into standby? Please answer these questions so that I can help you with your problem.

    hi,

i currently have nothing hooked to it but momentarily after the screenwarmer comes on it flashes a screen that says "AIR2 MONO" in the top right hand corner or something like that which i would guess is the source input that it's currently on and then goes black, but green light stays green on front. then it goes through the same process again, with the blue screenwarmer coming on, momentarily flashing the same air2 mono stuff again then goes black. it repeats this about 3 to 6 times and then stays black. you can see what appears to be very faintly lit snow onscreen. the power standby button through that process is operable during the akai screenflash process it repeats but then becomes inoperable. there is a click at start up coming from the main power supply that i had assumed was some sort of relay for the cooling fans. fans come on immediately at start up and stay on all the way through. let me know if you need any more info and i can get it for you.

I am afraid you have bad audio/video mainboard. Can you please coonfirm whether u r able to bring upthe menu?

  • vegaguy72 Jun 01, 2010

    hi again,

no menu selection is available as the screen shuts down and goes to standby before i can do anything with it. i can't confirm that any of the buttons work to cue the menu screen because of the abrupt turnoff and restart.

    eagle338 Jun 01, 2010

You said that you see a faint snow like screen after the restart cycle stops. That's when you should try the menu. The green led staying on and screen staying black means that I am 99% sure that it's the audio/videomain board.

  • vegaguy72 Jun 02, 2010

    hey again,

tried the menu/source/volume buttons and for a brief moment they show up on screen and are operable, then go black and inoperable with the rest of the screen. there is also no sign of any menu or volume subscreen through the faint black snow.

Then it's confirmed. We can try a component level repair, provided you have prior experience and a multimeter that can measure capacitance as the problem points to a possible capacitor failure. More often than not you can visually identify a faulty cap if it's bulged at the top and/or is leaking. However it can be tricky sometimes and I have seen them read an overload on the meter despite of looking pretty alright.

  • vegaguy72 Jun 03, 2010

    yeah,

i kinda thought this initially but had to get a second opinion. so do you in your opinion think it's the main video board or one of the smaller video boards? there is the "main" board that coincides with two smaller boards. main board has Yg, Yb, Yr, and assorted video inputs and outputs and smaller boards consist of rca inputs and s-video, and the board that sits on that board has a coax cable input. my thought is to replace the capacitors first before doing anything else. what's your thoughts?

  • vegaguy72 Jun 10, 2010

    update:

changed the main video input board and no luck. as a matter of fact the blue akai screenwarmer no longer turns on. not sure where to look now. hmmmmm....

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Jun 10, 2010

Sounds like a faulty replacement don't you think?

  • vegaguy72 Jun 10, 2010

could be. i will test capacitance and see if that is the problem. shouldve probably did that on the old board but i got a "good deal" on a different one. maybe not such a good deal after all. i will report back. thanks a bunch for all your help so far!

You are welcome. I will see if I can find a service manual so that we can perform a more thorough check.

AKAI PDP5006H Plasma tv

1) Is the TV plugged directly into an outlet or is it plugged into another device, such as a cable box or audio receiver? If it is, try plugging directly into a wall outlet. Sometimes, devices like cable boxes don't provide enough current to power on more powerful newer TVs (like Plasma, LCD, etc) .

2) Check the manual to see if the flashing LED is a code for something you need to troubleshoot. The number and color of flashes may correspond to a problem that may or may not be easily fixed.

Hope that helps. Let me know how you make out.

See I cant cross that part number and I have all the boards sitting in front of me. That number is the akai part number, but not the actual number of the board. There are 2 boards that they call main in the service manual, the main control board which actually drives the panal, and the "main video board" which handels the video inputs and on screen displays.

PCB failure analysis
1. MAIN CONTROL : a. Abnormal noise on screen. b. No picture.
2. MAIN (video): a. Lacking color, Bad color scale.
b. No voice.
c. No picture but with signals output, OSD
and back light.

If you can determine which of the 2 boards is the problem, I can sell you a new replacement for $125 shipped.

Basicall....Control board is no picture at all.

Main board is no picture, but on screen displays work.

Thats a real tough call on your problem as the set acts like its working normal and then gives out. It could be any number of things, but mostlikely somthing is drawing too much power causing a protection fault hence the power off. These types of problems are very hard to diagnose as the stuff your looking at looks good, its not until it warms up (even being a few seconds or so) that they go bad. You can allways put a meter on the VA and VS to see if there is a flucuation in voltage or even a spike and that could tell you possibly which board is the culpret, but the best is to replace and not repair as switching supplys can be a pain.
