Question about HP Pavilion a1200y (EK457AV) PC Desktop
HP Pavillion a1200y. Had the system for about 3 years and then it started having issues with starting up. At first, it would not power on with a keyboard or mouse plugged in to the PS/2 ports.
I tried starting it without them plugged in and then plugging them in quickly before Windows started. Worked intermittently. Also tried using USB mouse and keyboard only with same results.
I've also replaced the power switch for the case and added a new PSU. I don't see any bulging capacitors or corrosion that would indicate a MB failure, but I suspect that could be the only problem. It also used to give the warning that the CMOS battery was dead and default settings were being used. Could that stop it from starting up? Should I attempt a replacement MB (E Bay has some). Trying to see if it's even worth the $50 to get it running again.
Dead CMOS battery does not cause the problem you are describing. More likely your southbridge chipset is defective on your motherboard. Replace the motherboard.
