F12 to get boot menu then select CD. The CD drive should led up. If it doesn't read the CD clean the CD in straight motion, try another boot CD as well. If it won't read at all, then your CD drive may be defective and need replacement.

Hard disk 1 (3f1) error

Hp says it is a potential problem with your external hard drive.Download Hard Disc Sentinel, the free version will give you enough info on the HDD status to determine if it has an issue. The other alternative would be to unplug the drive before you bootup to avoid the message - plug it back in when Windows has loaded and check the drive for errors or problems by clicking on: My Computer - right click E drive or whatever letter the drive has - click on Properties at the bottom of the options panel - click on Tools which opens check disk options.Good Luck

I have an HP dv6700 that won't boot windows. It's running vista 32 bit with Phoenix bios on there. I have tried a recovery disk but there seem to be no startup errors nor did it find memory nor hard drive...

BIOS diags do not test RAM's Windows functionality. Download Microsoft's Memory diagnostic too and burn to a cd. then test your memory.
To run Windows Memory Diagnostic, you must reboot your computer with the disk or CD-ROM on which you installed Windows Memory Diagnostic in the drive. After the reboot, Windows Memory Diagnostic will load and its interface will appear. After loading, the first test pass will begin, using the default standard test suite, and continue until complete, unless Windows Memory Diagnostic is either paused or exited. Once the first test pass is complete, Windows Memory Diagnostic will begin a second test pass using the same settings as before. Windows Memory Diagnostic will continue to run test passes until you exit.

Hi when try to boot my laptop it says hp 3f0 and hard disk not exist. Can i get back all my files/pics without before creating a partion recovery? Can you please set me instruction and by the way...

Hi mohamed04,

I recommend you to perform an HDD self test so we can understand if you have a faulty HDD or just a Software problem caused by any windows update or virus that might have corrupted your windows boot file.

For performing an HDD self test you should turn on the unit and when HP invent logo appears press " ESC " key, then you will have access to other menu where you should select option " F2 - System Diagnostics" and then " F4 - Hard disk Test" . After process finishes it will provide you a message with " success" or #xx Fail".

You need a new hard drive and install fresh windows operating system. Maybe after that you can try to put your old hard drive to external enclosure hard drive and try to recover your computer will recognize the hard drive. Hope this helps,

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-1230us notebook. I noticed some skipping on my programs so decided to restart my computer. Upon restarting it I ended up with a startup failure screen, so I had it launch startup...

Get a new drive in a caddy and boot your computer within safe mode (press F8 as it loads).
Copy all you can to the new drive.
If you cannot do that, buy a replacement hard drive and load your system disk in the CD Rom drive booting from it. When the system is loaded and running, power the desktop down, fit the old drive and set the jumper as SLAVE.
Boot up your desktop and there will be what is left of your data on drive D. Copy all you require before it is too late!
Hope that helps.

My hp womt start up the quixk start lighta cpme on then notging

If a PC suddenly fails to boot properly, you should perform a hard reset as the first procedure.
  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
  2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds .
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not connect the battery), Press the Power button, Look for glowing LEDs near caps lock and num lock keys, and Listen for sounds of a disk drive and fan turning.
If there is a problem with the LCD display's back light or a corrupted graphics driver, the display may appear blank but the notebook may be displaying information. Attach an external monitor to test the display. If the image displays on the external monitor, there may be a graphics driver conflict. To resolve this, turn on the computer and press f8 key, then select Enable low-resolution video . If the image displays on the LCD display in low resolution, you can download and install the latest drivers for your specific graphics driver. If there is an image on the external monitor but the notebook display remains black, contact HP for technical assistance.

Even though users are instructed to disconnect all peripheral devices from the notebook when doing a hard reset, some devices are often overlooked.

Double-check that all devices are disconnected including: external keyboard and mouse (wired or wireless), USB connected external drives and devices, thumb drives and flash drives, network storage devices, PC card, SD memory cards, express card, eSata connections, firewire or similar devices, printer, scanner, camera, port replicator, or docking station, any CD/DVD from the optical disc drive, and any media from the multi-card reader.

If the computer can access part of the memory, it may be possible to access the BIOS Setup Utility display and perform a memory self test to identify other memory issues. If the computer cannot boot to the BIOS Utility, try removing and reseating the memory and the hard drive, and then repeat the following steps to perform the memory self test.
  1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer.
  2. Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu.
  4. In the BIOS Setup Utility, use the Right Arrow or Left Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Diagnostics .
  5. Use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow keys to select Memory Test .
  6. Press Enter , and then Yes to perform memory test.
  7. After test completes, press f10 to Save and Exit , and then press Enter to Exit Saving Changes? .
Many computer problems are related to soft failures (or degraded performance) on the hard drive. The HP Hard Drive Self Test will repair soft errors on the hard drive, but it will not report the errors. After the test is complete, restart the computer to see if test repaired the problem you may been experiencing. Use the steps below to test the hard drive in a computer using the HP Hard Drive Self Test.

Plug the AC Adapter into the computer.
Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
Use the Left Arrow or Right Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option. Depending on your BIOS, this may be located below either Diagnostics or Tools .
Select Primary Hard Drive Self Test , and then press the Enter key to start the test.

Many computer problems are related to soft failures on the hard drive. The comprehensive portion of the HP Hard Drive Self Test repairs soft errors on the hard drive, but does not report the errors. After the test completes, be sure to restart the computer to determine if the test repaired any problems you are experiencing with your computer.

Plug the AC Adapter into the computer.
Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu.
Use the Right Arrow or Left Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option. Depending on your BIOS, this may be located below either Diagnostics or Tools .
  • Select Primary Hard Drive Self Test , and then press the Enter key to start the test.

  • NOTE: The exact wording of the option for your particular BIOS may be slightly different.
    1. If Windows does not start properly, reset the BIOS to the default settings. Using the default settings, you should be able to boot into Safe Mode and install the latest BIOS. To reset the BIOS, press the power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 to enter the BIOS setup, then press f9 key to Reset BIOS Default . For more information, refer to the HP Notebook PCs - Configuring the Boot Order in the System BIOS support document.
    2. If it will not boot to the BIOS, you may need to remove and re-seat the hard drive. Instructions may vary depending on the notebook model you are using. For specific instructions on re-seating the hard drive in the notebook, refer to the HP Notebook PCs - Steps for Removing and Replacing the Hard Drive support document.
    3. After re-seating the hard drive, perform a hard drive reset.

    17 inch monitor goes blank

  • Prepare to diagnose the computer .
    1. Disconnect all peripheral devices.
    2. Perform a Hard Reset.
    3. Disable the Automatic restart on system failure option.
  • Remove any non-system disc from the computer . During startup, the BIOS checks different devices to locate the Windows operating system. If the boot order is set to check the optical disc drive or the card reader (if the notebook is equipped with a card reader) before it checks the hard drive, and there is a non-system disc in the CD/DVD drive or there is a memory card in the card reader, the boot will fail. This problem can be resolved by setting the BIOS to check the hard drive first.
  • Reseat the memory modules . If you are getting memory errors, most BIOS versions have additional tests that can be run to test the memory. There could be a problem if one of the sticks is defective or loose in the memory slots. To determine what is causing the memory failure, disconnect all electrical power, and then remove and re-insert the memory modules firmly into the slots. Some HP Notebook PCs come with two sticks of memory and have two memory slots. On most notebooks, the memory module compartment is located on the bottom of the case, but the exact position varies by model. On some models, the memory compartment is under the keyboard. See your User Guide for the exact location of memory modules on your notebook.
  • Reset the BIOS to default condition . If you have made changes in the BIOS setting, such as disabling a device or changing the boot order, it could prevent the computer form starting properly. To restore the BIOS to its factory-recommended settings, turn on the computer and press f10 to access BIOS setup, and then press f9 to load the default BIOS configuration.
  • Perform a memory self test . There are different reasons that you may see a memory error. There could be a physical problem or it could be a program error. If the error is a program error, you will most likely see a Windows error message. If there is a physical problem with a memory module, the computer may fail part way through the boot process. Most computers have a built-in memory test to help identify if the memory modules are seated properly and are free of errors. To run the memory test, turn on the computer and press f2 .
    • If the System Diagnostics screen displays, select the Start-up Test to run the system memory test. Press the Esc key once the memory test is complete.
    • If the BIOS Diagnostics screen displays, select Memory Test .
  • Reseat the hard drive . If you get a specific hard drive error message on a black screen indicating the hard drive error, reseat the hard drive. If the computer has been dropped or jarred, or the hard drive has been replaced recently, the drive may not be seated tightly. The hard drive LED should blink if the hard drive has a solid connection in the notebook. Refer to the on-line User's Guide for specifics on locating and removing / replacing a hard drive. HP provides video directions for performing this task for many computer models. Remove and reseat the hard drive firmly into the mounting bracket.
  • Test the hard drive . If you get a hard drive error message, you can test the hard drive. Many computer problems are related to soft failures (or degraded performance) on the hard drive. The HP Hard Drive Self Test will repair soft errors on the hard drive, but it will not report the errors. After the test is complete, restart the computer to see if test repaired the problem you may been experiencing. To run the hard drive test, turn on the computer and press f2 .
    • If the System Diagnostics screen displays, select the Hard Disk Test to run the hard drive test. Allow the Quick and Long Hard Disk Self Tests to run.
    • If the BIOS Diagnostics screen displays, select Primary Hard Disk Self Test . Allow the Quick and Long Hard Disk Self Tests to run.
