Reverse fan direction with lutron wall switch

Posted by on

  • stepheng7 May 30, 2010

The wall switch is a Lutron Maestro Dual Digital Dimmer that controls fan speed and light. The fan direction was reversed mistakenly by my wife when she was turning the fan on. I can't seem to duplicate what she did. It probably involved tapping the square button and side speed button. The fan is a Hampton Bay Hawthorne

Normally the fan direction is reversed with a small switch that is on the side of the fan body. If you wish to accomplish this from a wall switch, then those wires from the internal fan switch would have to be extended to the wall switch. If this is a remote control situation, then your manual should be able to hepl you resolve it.
If you need more detail or assistance please reply with the switch and fan make and model numbers and more detail about the situation ..

Well I hear what you are saying .. but I asked Lutron for a second oppinion .. and they also said that it cannot work that way , which was my first thought .. I would say that you will need to use the switch on the side of the fan to reverse the fan direction ..

Why doesn't ceiling fan reverse?

Putting the fan in reverse is done by mechanically reversing the leads powering the motor. All the wall switch does is supply the power and the fan circuits take care of the speeds and direction.

Your problem is with the fan reverse control and/or electronics.

How to manually reverse ceiling fan direction.

You did not provide a make or model of your fan, but check your owner's manual if you have one. There should be a website or a service support telephone number to obtain more information. Most ceiling fans have a reversing switch on the fan itself. They can be a pull-chain type or a slide switch.

How do you reverse the fan with the Lutron S2-LFSQ dimmer? The actual fan does not have a switch on it?

Sorry, its not something you can do from the wall-control. Unless the fan had a an embedded/built-in control module, the fan manufacturer's rarely make the "reverse" setting available from the wall control.

I have a Lutron Skylark SLV-600p and I want to connect it to control the ceiling fan with light fixture. The chain broke on the ceiling fan and its an old model which the device is inside the light box...

1) It appears this dimmer is not for fan motor.
Dimmer manual says:
"... do not use to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting fixtures, or motor-driven appliances."

2) Call Lutron tech support directly:

3) You can replace the pull chain switch to the fan with a bit of dis-assembly and then purchase of new 3-way fan switch at home center. If you decide to do that, add a comment and we can talk details.

4) In order to get a fan-light control to operate from your switch location, you need the following things:
-Fan has to set on high, so unscrew brass part where chain attaches to fan and see if you can grab end of pull chain, and set fan to high.
-Switch box has to be set up to control the light and fan separately. It sounds like your switch box has that capability with a black wire going to light and red wire to fan.
-You need a Lutron combo control that is specifically for controlling ceiling fan, and light fixture.
Call Lutron for best choice.

Last option: 5) Replace fan with new one from home center.

Add a comment if you order the Lutron combo control and I will help you test the wiring and get it hooked up.

Hello, I just installed the Maestro Fan/Light switch (MA-LFQHW) to my cieling fan/light. The fan works perfectly however, the light after a moment or two will start to pulse (dim) then return to normal....

Thank you for including the Manufacturer, Model and Model number
Lutron makes a long list of products.

I found the product manual at Lutron: and am looking at the instructions

The Lutron device replaces an ordinary single pole switch.
It is not made to control compact florescent bulbs, just incandescent bulbs.
The switch has to have a ground wire.
Lutron tech assistance 1-800-523-9466 (included just in case I cannot find the trouble)
Troubleshooting in manual: They mention 'upper LED on wall control cycle rapidly.'
The solution is to check wiring, which we will review.
The fan and lights are supposed to be on high (this means your pull chain controls located on fan)

Let's review the wiring.
The switch wires connect to either brass screw.
The switch wires are usually black. Let's say they are black.
One of the black switch wires travels to fan in a cable.
This cable has 2 wires: a black and white.
This cable goes to fan.
The black wire carries power to the fan.
The power wire, or Hot wire from switch connects to the Module-black wire.
The Module-white wire connects to the Neutrals (which are white and usually twisted together and covered with a wire nut).
So all your Neutrals are joined together and covered with wire nut.
The Module-red wire connects to light-wire
The Module-yellow wire connects to fan-wire.

I'm looking at this wiring and it seems so straightforward, I can't find a problem.
According to the troubleshoot, the fan could NOT work properly if the wires were reversed at the Module.
The switch wires connect to either terminals, so there's no confusion there.

1) Unless you forgot the ground wire, or 2) you're using compact florescent bulbs, or 3) the light is not on high, I can't see where the problem is.
I suggest you call the Lutron tech support number.
They may suggest a circuit analyzer, for example a small voltage ground fault in the line might affect their device.
In any case, I want to know how this turns out because I specialize in electrical devices.

My ceiling fan has no reverse switch, how do i change the direction

My fan does not have a reverse switch for sure so I scoured the net and got no real answer. I did come accross a comment that said that it worked internally at the remote box in ceiling. Here is how I finally figured it out after about 6 months of searching. Put the fan on high, Turn wall switch OFF, Hold the HI button on remote, Turn switch back on. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sparq

Read this on another thread - apparently the solution came from HB's tech support.
Turn the fan speed to HI and then select Reverse.  You should hear a "click" and see the fan reverse direction.  It seems that the reversing relay only works when the fan speed is set to HI.
Good Luck!!

Wiring ceiling fans to wall switch

Hi Bigelow,

You need two switches.  It sounds like the Electrician set up the junction box for two circuits(Lights and Fans).  i say this because your supply has 4 wires, Red , Black, White and Bare. We may be able to oversome this with one Lutron Switch. Allow me to investigate, and I will be back.
