It can be any thing malfunctioning in your laptop. You should first try removing and cleaning the ram modules. maybe one of it is malfunctioning. Also try removing the harddrive and run the laptop without it. If there is some problem in the Motherboard it self like a corrupt BIOS etc then you will need to send it to Acer service center for repair. i f you can really dismantle your laptop try removing the WiFi module and any other modules as well that maybe malfunctioning.

How do I know the BIOS is corrupt?

  • Mohsin Idrees
    Mohsin Idrees Jun 03, 2010

The symptoms you have told indicate towards a corrupt/dead BIOS. As you have tried all the suggetions given therefore there is 85% chance that the problem is with your BIOS. You should contact Acer service center.

  • miqbal130 Jun 03, 2010

Thanks for your quick response. I have already disassemble the laptop and diagnose everything except the BIOS which I really don't know how to check. In case if the BIOS is dead or corrupt is it possible to repair it or we have to replace the motherboard.

    Thanks

If the BIOS is dead there is not much really you can do. Replacing the whole motherboard will surely solve your problem but i think it is better that you get it reapired by qualified Acer technicians. They maybe able to change the BIOS only and not the whole motherboard. Although if you have access to a spare motherboard on the cheap side then surely you should change the whole motherboard. :)

First thing to check out is if the battery is fully charged. Plug the A/C adapter into the wall and turn it on and see if you have full power. If it still shuts down after two seconds, remove the RAM memory sticks and switch them around. Now see if it boots up. If it still does not boot up, clean the fan area out with some computer cleaner and remove the dust that may be causing your computer to overheat. When the processor overheats, the computer will shut down in two seconds. Also try to boot your computer with the original restore CD that came with your computer. If you don't have that CD then you can use any Windows operating system CD/DVD. If it still don't boot up then you will need to replace the hard drive and/or the power supply.

The first thing to do to se if it just froze is this. Remove and replace the battery and try restarting, sometimes that's all it take. Then just hold down the start key to force it to restart and clear it. If that doesn't work, we have some serious troubleshooting to do, but half the time that's all it is. Upon reboot "if this doesn't work" you will see a message go by for a couple seconds, it will say hold "F-'and a key" to set back to factory specs, "or something similar" that is next, but let's take it slow and go one step at a time. I will try to look in on you later, but because it is a holiday I may be a while due to family commitments, don't think I forgot, you will see from my testimonials, I have done several of these before. I just don't want to throw a million things at you we may not need,

It sounds like a memory problem, if you have 2 sticks of ram swap them out and see if you can get it to work with one

I am sorry but it seems that you are working with another expert, since I have no idea why he or she told you to remove the hard drive, and don't know what else you were asked to do, I cannot help you. It is more or less understood that you should stay with one expert, try the suggestions and then th expert can determine how to proceed. Now I don't know what else you were asked to do. There is no centralised command center here, it's everyone working from their home or office, answereing questions. I would not have asked you to remove the drive. Now it would be necessary to clear the cmos and try a restart. If you choose to try that, then look on the motherboard for the jumper next to or around the procesor and move it over to the 2nd qnd 3d pin thus clearing the memory. Then replace it back to where it was, and reboot, let me know,

Thank you very much. I appreciate your advice. However I don't see CMOS. Its a laptop motherboard and its difficult to find the tiny parts. Could you guide me where is the CMOS and jumpers in this laptop motherboard.

    Thanks

  • George Bill
    George Bill Jun 08, 2010

The cmos is the jumper next to the battery, located either under or on the side of it. All it is , is a jumper. You will see 3 pins and 2 of them will be crossed with the jumper on a plastic "1/8 inch size wafer. You need to move it over 1 pin the replace it, thus clearing the setings it uses to "boot up". You can try removing the battery also if you are unsure about the jumper. It is the sixe of a quarter, and just pops out.

  • miqbal130 Jun 08, 2010

I think you are talking about a laptop in general. I have ACER 5100 series. Its battery is smaller than a quarter and I don't see any jumber beside the battery. Since the battery is built-in (soldiered) on the motherboard and it is not possible just to take it out. If I take the battery out then I have to souldier it.

If you are familiar with Acer 5100 then you can give me better advice.

    Thanks
    Iqbal

First is try to check if there are issue of power porblem. Try to run the computer using the power adapter only. take out the battery and power on the computer using the power adapter only. If computer wont power up then there could be a problem with oyur power adapter. If computer will boot up then there could be issue on your battery.

    Archie Cruz May 31, 2010

Hi. This is a memory module issue. All you need to do is to open the computer then take out the memory module than clean the metal stripes using the pencil eraser then put it back in. If same issue after you clean the memory cards then you need to replace the memory card.

Actually its an overheating problem.. What you need to do is replace the processor fan and heat sink.. Take it to a repair shop and have this done..

Posted on May 31, 2010

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jun 03, 2010

Its overheating,, if you remove the keyboard ,,

1.) remove rack where power button and stuff are by prying it up..

    2.) remove keyboard..

    3._ remove metal shield,,

now you see that fan on the top right,, and the heat sink,,
notice the heat sink has a lot of dust and when u press the power button it attempts to spin and then cut off before the laptop shuts off,,,

replace / clean heatsink and replace fan..

I think that the cpu cooler of your laptop is not working. It's not so easy to open up the laptop case, so I advice you to get it at a service center.

It's an internal hardware problem; either cpu error or motherboard error. Get it at a service center and don't force it to work, or it maybe destroyed for ever.

replace the battery. Batteries usually only last about two years and it sounds like it just cant hold any more juice. To find a battery go to google.com and type in the model of computer and push search. Sorry for the news but its an easy fix

Acer Aspire 5100 problem

You don't want to hear this I know, but your symptoms are very much like those of a computer in which the motherboard or processor has died. It is defnitely not the hard drive as you would still get a display and be allowed to go into Bios even if the hard drive was totally out of the computer. And missing memory would result in bios beeps indicating a faulty bios configuration, but all of that requires that the motherboard and processor be good. If they are not, you have the situation you are speaking about.

Power cuts off for acer aspire 5100

Hi,
I,d suspect your problem will lie with, the systems CPU ( Processor ) or a component Overheating on the systems Motherboard. I would,nt suspect the Power Supply personally. unless your batterys not charging.

Acer Aspire 1804WSMi (hardware issue)

Can you get into the bios at setup and reset it to default settings.....the CPU cannot burn out what happens if it overheats it just shuts down. I dont think its a hardware issue because you said youhad to shut it down by removing the battery and the adapter you shut it down I imagine by holding down the power on button?. When you have to do that its a software problem.
