Question about Craftsman 22" Rear Bag Rear Propelled High Wheel Lawn Mower ()

1 Answer

I have a brand new Crafsman 22" Rear Bag Front Propelled High Wheel Lawn Mower with a key start. It worked fine for about 20 minutes but then would not turn off once the power lever was released. It just sat there running.

I'm in Alaska at work and the mower is at home in Texas. I'll check this fix out when I get home on June 9. I didn't notice anything loose when I put the mower up. It would help if I could see a picture of the handle harness/wiring connectors/switch to make sure I'm looking at the right thing once I get there. I did take the key out of the auto start and it still ran.

Thank you. I'm trying to get that info from my family at home so I can look this up.

  • judith_c_edw May 31, 2010

It is a Craftsman 190cc 22" Briggs & Stratton Rear Bag Rear High Wheel Front Propelled Lawn Mower, Item #07137653000 / Model 37653. I just tried to input that number in the Sears PartDirect website and it comes up with nothing but the mower itself. No diagrams.

Perfect. I'll see if I can get my sister to find the right number.

Thanks Kelly. I'll do that as soon as I get home. I've got everyone here at work (oil fields on the North Slope of Alaska) telling me to take the mower back since I've had it less than 10 days. And you're right, it's a pain. I already had to take one back the day I bought it because they loaded up the wrong one which I didn't know until I had gotten it out of the car and box opened up.

It sounds as if the connector for the handle harness became disconnected. Check the wiring connectors and see if one of them came apart. (including the switch...) If it is not that simple please provide a model number and I will dig in the manuals to do what I can do to help you.

Thanks for using FixYa.

    Hi Judith,

When you get home I really need your model number to get your diagram. If you have your model number you can look up the diagram on the parts list at http://searsdirect.com by typing the model number in the parts look up on the right side of the page. The diagram will come up and it will zoom as you mouse over the diagram.

If your not able to find it or the link does not work just respond here and I will look it up for you and provide you the exact link once I have your model number.

The link I passed was incorrect.

    http://www.searspartsdirect.com is the correct link.

A model number will look like this 917.378490

After several tries I was able to use this number to bring up a 22 inch high wheeled mower. 917.376530

When you get to that page look at itmes 72, 73 and 79. Just follow the harness and check all connectors. If those connectors are all good then you will need to check the harness at the engine connection. If all of the harnesses are connected, I recommend that you do not do anything else and contact Sears for their nearest warranty service center. You run the risk of voiding the warranty if you do not do that. I know it is a pain but you really should contact Sears for warranty Service if all of the connectors are connected. You may very well have a defective wiring harness that was installed at the factory.

    Thanks for using FixYa,

    Kelly

22 In Craftsman Self propelled.Starts easy, runs good for about 15-20 mins. Starts missing and dies. Will start again in about 30 mins New spark plug/ air filter

Oh my, that is so annoying. There is probably dirt in the carb. or the gas tank. What I think happens is, the dirt gets sucked up into the fuel line and clogs the carb, then when the mower sits for a while the dirt goes back into the tank for another couple minutes. I have absolutely no tolerance for this when it happens.

Does the belt slip going uphill or with a full grass bag? My Craftsman mower lost the self propel feature. The small pulley on the top of the transmission would slip under load, There was just not enough tension on the belt to over come it. Tried a new belt and also replaced the tensioner spring...still slipping when going uphill or with full bag. Possible pulleys worn...not wanting to gamble more time and labor, I bought a 4" 1/4" cap screw with extra nuts and flat washers, a 3"16 eye bolt as well. Drill a 1/4" hole in the bracket that holds the trans activation cable in place and a 3/16" hole in the mower deck so the holes are in alignment with each other. Put the cap screw through the 1/4" hole with the threads facing toward the front of the mower. Fasten the eye bolt into the 3/16" hole in the mower deck locking it in place with one nut on each side of the metal. Now you have the 1/4" bole protruding through the eye bolt. Using a flat washer and nut, tighten then nut easily and when there is room put a second nut on it. When you have tightened it up to the desired belt tension lock the two nuts together using two wrenches. Note...do NOT make the belt incredibly tight or you will destroy the trans in a short time. Go a little at a time till the drive does not slip under load. Good luck hope this helps. Oh....you will have to trim the plastic cover that covers the transmission so the added bolt will clear it and you can put the cover back in it's proper place.
