Question about Rheem 40 Gallon FVR NATGAS Low WATER HEATER 6YR 22V40SF

Hot water heater not venting properly.

Hi everyone,

I am having some issues with the exhaust from my gas hot water heater. I will give as many details as I can, but if I forget something, let me know!

My hot water heater sends its exhaust through my chimney. It is currently the only thing using the chimney, as my furnace is a new high efficiency.

The hot water heater ducting is connected to a flexible metal tube that runs to the top of the chimney, and out.

I seem to be getting some air backing up, and it's affecting the flow of the gases out of the house.

If I leave a basement window open, the problem goes away.

I feel I will need to install some kind of vent coming inside, but as it is a brick house, that wont be happening anytime soon.

Can I install some sort of in line fan to push the gases out the chimney? Would this work?

Any input is greatly appreciated

Hi .. it appears that your house is very tight. From your description of leaving a window open , it seems that the gas heater is suffering from lack of make - up air. Forcing the gas exhaust up the chimney will not really resolve this. You will still be trying to move air out without any air input to replace it. You may be able to install a spring loaded vent so there will be an air exchange. Something like a dryer or bath vent hood installed backwards .. this might work. There does not need to be much of a make-up air supply .. something like a 1 inch hole might be enough. I have seen this problem in a neighbors house , he weather proofed his house so good, that his fireplace would not light, no draft !

Any thoughts, concerns?

Gas exhaust smell when Hot water heater ignites

Absolute danger here:

1) Call gas company IMMEDIATELY to check for gas leak that can cause explosion and fire.

2) Call plumber immediately to fix improper combustion or improper vent before toxic combustion by-product kills family.
Gas appliances must vent toxic by-product outside and away from home where the gasses will kill the planet instead of you.

Most gas water heater problems today can be solved with yearly maintenance that includes cleaning burner parts, clean air intake, check venting, check electrical connections, bleed gas line, and check gas pressure.
Gas water heater manuals recommend yearly maintenance by service technician.

In past years, gas water heaters required less maintenance, but they were less energy efficient and more dangerous to operate.

Sounds like you have Intellivent gas control valve thermostat.
Open following link to identify gas valve and see error codes:

Error light on vacation + 2 other lights = 3 possible conditions:
1) Wiring error: check outlet with circuit analyzer:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Typical-circuit-analyzer-15.jpg
2) Pressure switch tubing not connected, air intake obstructed (clean intake), or vent exhaust obstructed (check for proper venting).

3) System in lockout: Low gas pressure, hot surface igniter not positioned correctly.

You can do some of this yourself.

Hello Mike,
Check gas pressure, burner parts need to be cleaned, check electrical outlet, hot surface igniter is bad

White Rodgers intellivent error code:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html#Intellivent
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intelli-vent-gas-valve2.pdf

Error code says: system in lockout, but you know that.
1) Low gas pressure, no gas to water heater: call gas company to check pressure
2) Hot surface igniter not positioned correctly: inspect and clean burner parts.

3) Low voltage to water heater/ outlet has wrong polarity: Use circuit analyzer on electrical outlet to make sure polarity is correct

The question is unclear.
Diminished output could mean you have less less pressure on hot side and hot water barely trickles, or it could mean you have fewer gallons of hot water available.
The type of water heater is also unclear. Do you have gas or electric, or indirect or tankless or tank or power vent, or RV heater.
The label located on side of water heater is valuable source of information.
As a general rule the serial number is not important, but the type of heater and possibly model number are important. Serial numbers are used by manufacturer to identify your product, and also contain information about age of water heater.

Causes for less hot water.
Cold incoming water, thermostat set too low.
With gas heater, location can be issue if burner not getting enough air.
With gas: poor venting, or new furnace with power vent
Sediment in water lines, or clogged pipes, or clogged shut off valve could cause problems.
Defective parts can be a suspect.

Solutions: First of all, exact information must be included because nobody can see through walls without description from person who can see.

Sounds like you may have the wrong type gas going to this? Is this an LP gas or natural gas unit? will say on label. Natural gas units run only on natural gas ditto for LP. Could be issue with manifold pressure settings. Could be obstruction in exchanger or vent. Have a authorized technician check over

Gas smell during startup of GE hot water heater

yes, provided there is no excessive build up. The gas and air mix must be right before the mixture will ignit. a household stove will do this each time it's turned on. That's why yhe igniter sparkk hits about three times before it lights. proper venting will confine any fumes to the cimbustion chamber to be carried out the exhaust. If the odor is strong then have the appliance checked for safety sake.

Tankless water heater error code 11

I was having the same problem untill I reallized it was my venting system. Test the water heater with no vent on top. Disconnect the vent pipe from the water heater and try turning on the hot water. the water heater needs a special adapter to vent the direct vent water heater. One other thing you can check is the gas pressure in your home. You have to have between 7 and 8 WC (water Column) for the tankless water heaters. You can call your gas supplier to find out what you have.

I had the same problem with my tankless waterheater (flashing c4 76 alternately). I called Rheem
tech support and they had me 1 power down the remotepanel 2 unplug the unit from the wall 3 remove the cover 4 remove the wires for the remote panel from the circuit board and pull the twisted pair that goes to the remote out from the bottom of the unit. 5 reinstall the cover 6 plug the unit back
into the wall and turn on the hot water see if it works. It did in my case and they are sending me a new remote panel. I hope it helps.........
