Question about Mtd Garden

1 Answer

Runs fine until I engage the PTO and am on a slight incline.Starts to spit and sputter and cut off. Checked Plug Gap, Magneto Gap. Worked fine last summer. All I did this time was replace the blades. Replaced old gas with new gas. No matter how I adjust the Carb to make it run fine and idle fine, as soon as I either get in some tall grass or am on an incline, it dies. The Briggs and Stratton engine, model 282H07-0334-E1, has a wiring harness with two leads attached to the bottom of the bowl on the carb. Disconnecting that results in an immediate shutdown. Had NO problems with it last summer and began this problem when started up this year.

Check your fuel lines for clogging if it ran fine last year means you have a clogged fuel line somewhere or the carb itself is stopped up disassemble the carb and do a visual inspection also use B12 chemtool carb cleaner use both the spray and the fuel cleaner treatment i know for sure your problem is related to ethanol fuel hope this helps good luck and always run your equipment completely out of fuel for long term storage or between seasons

SOURCE: 2 1/2 Briggs......doesn't run smoothly....surges at all speeds.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.

SOURCE: starts runs min. or two then stops....

Go to toro.com then click customer care, then click manuals and parts. Type in model no. and download the owners manual. This should get you the spark and flywheel gap. Probably still something in the carb. Some orifices are very hard to find and to clean but they must be clean. Also check for dirt dopper nest in the muffler.

You've checked the wiring to the PTO and it looks OK. Does the PTO engage when the switch is thrown? Do you have a multi meter , so you can trace the voltage to the switch, from the switch to the PTO. You also should check the safety switch (s) which will prevent the PTO from engaging if there is a faulty switch. And it could simply be a fuse that has blown.

John Deere LX173 pto will not engage. Wet recently

Probably the pto switch. Find the 2 wire 'T' plug from the PTO clutch and disconnect. With a voltmeter across the the 2 spades on the tractor side of the plug you should get 12 volts DC with the PTO switch on ( you may need to sit in the seat ). If you get 12 volts at the plug its probably the PTO clutch. If no power then its a fuse or the PTO switch

The 12.5 murray 38 in runs fine until i engage the blades, while engaged the mower runs fine for about five seconds then starts to spit and sputter.once i disengage the blades it runs smoothly again

The problem is in the carb. First try using some bottled fuel system cleaner at a heavier dose than for a car, but be aware that too much may damage the carb. Then run the fuel out and fill with fresh and try again. When you engage blades and it sputters try to throttle down until it runs smooth and then slowly bring engine back up to mowing speed. You should be able bring it up and mow. Run out the fuel tank. If unable to do this trick and get the fuel system cleaner through you will need to have the carb. taken apart and cleaned thoroughly.

Engine does not start. Starter & solenoid work fine. Checked air filter, fuel filter, fuel level, level in choke position. Plug is kind of flooded. Increased plug gap slightly. There is no spark....

Most small engines use a flywheel with a magnet embedded in it and an ignition coil with a core that sits a few thousandths away from the flywheel. Ignition coils are common failures probably because they come from our wonderful Chinese friends. They have demolished all US manufacturers. If you replace the coil, use some gauge to measure the gap between coil core and the flywheel magnet surface before removing the old coil. Otherwise you may spend a little time using trial & error to get the engine running again.
If your engine is a Briggs and Stratton, you can find very complete maintenance downloadable information on their website. This will pertain to the engine only, not the mower.
Dunno about Tecumseh, haven't had much need for service info on those.

When my dirtbike is finally warmed up it begins to spit and sputter. I wrecked and bent my head pipe slightly. Would this cause my bike to want to die? When it is cold it runs just fine.

Hi, you dont say what this bike is, is it. Two or four stroke engine,
On a 2stroke this type of problem could simply be carbon jumping around between the gap on the plug,
Or a crankshaft oil seal leaking,

Sounds like plugged catalytic converter, Disconnect exhaust in front of Cat. and see what happens. Check to see if you are losing fluid from radiator.

Spitting and sputtering

mine did the same, I found out that the high speed jet was clogged, I pulled the fuel line off the filtor(going to the carb), stuck the line into a mixture of half gas half carb cleaner, I fanned it up and in 2 or 3 minutes it started running well, hope this helps.
