Is the fridge side cooling properly, or is it warm too?

If the fridge side is warm, then you're losing coolant, and most likely have a leak in the compressor or coils.

If the fridge side is cold and the problem is isolated to the freezer, then the problem is with either the circulating fan or the cold control for the freezer. The circulating fan is inside the unit, behind a plastic panel on the back wall. With the fridge off, you should be able to move the fan blades freely (virtually no friction) With the fridge on, they should spin up within 5 minutes of plugging the fridge in.

If the fan is working properly, then the next thing to check is the thermostat. You can put a multimeter on the output of the thermostat, and verify that it changes (from voltage to no-voltage or from no-voltage to voltage) when you adjust the freezer thermostat, but I'm not aware of any diagnostic beyond that. They're cheap enough and easy enough to replace though.

    Thanks for the reply.

The fridge side is warm as well.

The circulating fan is running well, too.

I'll try to check the thermostat, not sure how/where this is...

    Thanks again.

If the compressor runs, then the thermostat is doing its job -- it's saying "I'm too warm, run the compressor"
The fact that it doesn't cool either side (fridge or freezer) means that the coolant isn't working, either because the compressor is burned out or because you've lost coolant. Since you didn't say anything about the compressor sounding bad, the most likely thing is that you've got a coolant leak. Sometimes these are reparable, sometimes they're not and the cost of the fix is more than a new fridge.

I wish I had better news for you, but I would recommend that you contact a local repair tech at this point to see if:
    #1 - am I right about what's broken
#2 - does it make economic sense to fix it or replace it

  • brindy2 May 31, 2010

I was able to get a local handyman to come over. He suspected the PTRC-Relay or the capacitor. He put a new PTRC-relay and capacitor in and it took off running. Apparently, the compressor was not running, even though the fan underneath was running. It seems to be cooling. We'll put the frozen stuff back in tomorrow.

    Thanks for your help.

The drain in the freezer behind back lower panel
needs opening. You can see it at the bottom of the back panel
underneath the evaporator coils. (The cold coils)
Run Hot water in the drain until it clears or use a hairdryer.
When the defrost melts the water it goes down the drain
If the drain is clogged with Ice or ? The defrost water
overflows into the ref. or freezer or on floor
Run Hot water in the drain until it clears or use a hairdryer.
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

Ice maker.....placed glass and push button to dispense ice and nothing happens. No sound as though ice is trying to dispense. Open freezer, plenty of ice in bin and cleaned out freezer and removed all ice....

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees
This can cause slow ice making if its too high even tho its freezing everything else at 25 degrees
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
The icemaker is 110v
See if water is in icemaker.
Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects.
If it ejects thenyou need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that
attaches to water line out of wall)
If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker.
If its leaking or no water at icemaker or door either one, then the valve at the rear bottom of ref needs replacing
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also if it is getting drinking water to the door but not to the icemaker (or vice versa) Then you need to replace
the water valve at the bottom rear of the fridge. It is a double valve and one side is not working
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

I HAVE A WHIRLPOOL SIDE X SIDE MODLE # ED5RHEXNL 03 MAKES ICE BUT NO WATER FLOW.

There is a double or triple water valve in your fridge. check continuity on the water dispenser valve coil in the back of the fridge (small terminals, thicker tubing, green coil). Replace valve (part number 4389177) if no continuity. If ok, check if there's line voltage (110-120V) to that coil when the dispenser actuator is pressed. If there is power and there is continuity on that coil - water line is frozen inside the freezer door. Turn off and defrost the refrigerator for full 24 hours. put towels under the freezer door to catch melting ice formed from condensation inside the door. repeat every year or as necessary.

If no power to the water valve coil - check the switch actuated by the water lever in the dispenser assembly. Replace if faulty. Regular microswitch is ok, but if you want the OEM part number, there it is: 2162361

Good luck!

Not cooling

Roy,
Are the evaporator coils in the freezer frozen up?
The evaporator is located behind the cover in the back of the freezer.
If so this may be a defrost issue.
The adaptive defrost timer may have failed.
This is located in the ref. side inside the front control pannel.

If not then you may have a freon leak.
This would have to be repaired by a qualified technician.

My bottom refrigerator is not cold. The freezer is okay.

Check to make sure the fan in the freezer compartment is working and not blocked. This delivers the cold air to the refrigerator. The fan should run every time the freezer calls for cold.

Heat strip is to hot on freezer door frame whirlpool frige sxs.....

Two things can cause this:

1. Dirty coils.
2. Bad condensor fan motor (this cools the coils). The fan motor can be accessed from the back by removing the lower panel.

No water to ice maker

  • The water line that's attached to the back of the refrigerator. Make sure you have good water flow. If the flow is poor, repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water.

  • The water-inlet valve. Replace it if it has failed.
