Laptop not booting

On turning on the laptop, the computer freezes, i think this is because the cpu or gpu are overheating, although i can hear and feel the cooling fans or maybe the temperature sensor thinks it is overheating even though it may not be.

If it is freezing up right away then the cpu could be damaged from overheating. Thats actually not that common a thing to happen. What would help here is to know exactly what you are seeing on th screen (if you are seeing anything) and at what is happening as far as lights, sounds, display etc.

After putting in the freezer for about an hour, it will boot up and last for about a minute; only just reaching the os, the computer doesn't feel hot to the touch even when not put in freezer.

If i don't freeze it to start with i just see the bios splash screen, but it pauses/stops, and i can even press f2 to reach the bios setup pages. As for sounds, there has never been any. the hdd light flashes sometimes to show activity, but as soon as it freezes it shows no activity.

p.s. i know that the freezer isn't the best place, but i thought it was worth a try after reading on some forum.

Putting it in the freezer is NOT a good a idea. Thats a good way to kill the lcd screen. That will cool off much faster than the internal parts and as soon as it gets too cold, poof its gone.To actually get the cpu and board stuff cold would take a few hours as the enclosure is actually going to insulate the internal parts.

If the laptop is overheating then the air at the exhaust will be just warm or more. You may feel a hot spot about where the cpu is on the bottom. It takes very little dust to cause overheating. Unless it has already damaged the cpu then it should take several minutes to heat up enough to show symptoms.

It is possible the ram modules are either loose or failing. Thats easy to eliminate as well. Take them out and put only one back in. If it works then it was either a loose or poor connection or it is the module itself. If you have more than one take the first out and check the second to be sure. If it is ram the problem should be in the #1 module as that is what it will boot on. It won;t see the second one until you begin to use the laptop.

Please Check your RAM.

Remove clean it and place it back. If it's not working try to replace the RAM with another RAM.

Shortly after I turn my computer it turns off

How long is shortly? If it runs and brings up the Windows Desktop and you are allowed to work for 10 minutes or longer then it shuts down, most likely the laptop is overheating. One way to tell if it is overheating is to immediately try to turn it back on after it shuts off. If it will not boot back up, it's overheating. If you let it sit and cool off for a while, then try to boot it back up and it does it successfully, it's overheating.Causes of Overheating:1) Dust all inside the computer. Fans clogged with dust, dust around the vents.2) Fan not working3) The Thermal Past around the CPU has dried up or is too thin the keep the unit cool. When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

I just used my Compaq laptop computer (Presario Cq40 108TU) this morning for 2 hours. This afternoon when I was about to use it, it turned on then while starting up it suddenly turned off. I tried again to...

When the CPU overheats then it will shutdown (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down.If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes this problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan. If the fan and heat sink is clogged withdust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use acan of compressed air to do this.

My dv6000 will power up and go back off

This model of laptop has an overheating problem. This problem affect the Nvidia GPU and cause that issue. You have two options, one cheap and one expensive.

The cheap one is that you must overheat the Nvidia GPU, in order to resolde it again. This procedure you can make it with a Heat Gun. I mean you need to extract the motherboard and apply the heat directly to the GPU 90 seconds max. Put all the pieces together again (dont forget to apply thermal paste to CPU and GPU) and when the laptop turn on again, go to the HP website and download the las Bios update to your model.
This solution give you as long time as you work with your laptop fresh. You can download the CORETEMP application, to keep watching the CPU temperture.
Cost: $ 20 Heat Gun (harbor freight), $ 7 new thermal paste (for the CPU and GPU)

The expensive one is send your computer to a authorize service center and ask for a reballing repair to your GPU. Cost may be $ 200.

If you need more details, let me know. GOOD LUCK

Screen freezes and shows lots of lines - must restart everything. This is happening more often.

This can be memory, CPU, Hard drive, or graphics card, or overheating.

To check the memory, hdd, and cpu you can download the ultimate boot cd UBCD Burn it to a disc then boot to it. Use the utilities on it to test your components.

To check and track your temps you can download HWMonitor keep this running until it crashes. Once it does, reboot then open it again. The program will show you the max that the cpu and gpu reached in temp. gpu ovr 60C is usually starting to overheat. CPU over 50-60C (unless its a core 2 duo or quad then its 80C) is overheating.

To help solve overheating buy a cooling pad and have the thermal paste/pads replaced on the cpu and gpu.

If the problem persists then there is a big possibility that your gpu is heating up to much and the motherboard is starting to lose the solder joints to it.

Well i can tell you that my 360 is not overheating because it has been off for 24 hours and right when i try to turn it on i get the 2 red lights

It is overheating, or atleast it thinks it is. The 3 things that overheat in a 360 that trigger those lights are the CPU, GPU, and RAM.
When you turn on the console, and the 2 lights start blinking do this...
Hold down the sync button and press the eject button, it should blink a certain number of lights rapidly. Continue to hold the sync button and each press of the eject button moves to the next number of a code. After 4 presses total, you should have a 4 digit code and be back on the regular speed blinking of the 2 lights.
And here is what they mean (4 lights = 0)
0011- CPU is overheating 0012- GPU is overheating 0013- RAM is overheating or faulty (this can be the tricky one)
For the CPU and GPU, a simple X clamp fix will cure them. Sometime simply putting pressure on the RAM corrects it's issue... sometimes. But sometimes it can be a bad solder under the RAM or just faulty RAM, in which case I would have an expert repair it.

I have this problem with my 60 gig, I think its due to overheating, I took it apart and put some Artic Silver Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and it played for about 6-7 hours but then started again. Could be due to overheating or possibly the GPU is going bad

HP pavilion DV6700nr laptop looses power

If it is (and it does sound like) a heat problem, the first thing do to would be to make sure the vents are clean and the fan and heatsink are free of dust buildup.

Here is a page from HP to assist you in doing so:

Reducing heat in notebooks

If you go into the BIOS setup, many have an option to monitor the CPU temp. Watch it and see what temp your computer shuts down.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya.
