Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

1 Answer

Craftsman DT 3000. I backed it in under my carport shed last Fall. I noticed it would sometimes grind a little when I pushed the forward or reverse pedal. I fired it up a week ago and no forward or reverse. Just a grinding noise. I put the disconnect into neutral so I could push it and the rear wheels seem to be locked up. I jacked it up in the rear and the wheels spin with the rod in the "push" position. They spin free with no noise coming from the rear end. With the disconnect in the "drive" position the tires spin. One thing I noticed today was with the tractor jacked up the parking brake lever below the dash does not move. It is in the down or off position. It did work last week. To me it seems like the belt driven shaft going to the rear end is not turning. I though maybe the belt needs to be adjusted tighter. My brother tells me there is a "brake" of some sort back there. I have a hard time kneeling and crawling so as of yet have not crawled under to see if I can see up to that area. It looks like maybe a wheel or the gas tank may have to come out to access it. To make matters more difficult, we have the Spanish maintenance manual, the English appears to have gotten tossed. chuck young

Thanks for the solution, I pretty much came up with the same idea but without a parts or maintenance book did not know how the linkage ran or about the spring.

Hi,

The parking brake sounds like it has stuck on. Follow the linkage which goes to the right rear of the mower. Reach up where there's a spring attached to the linkage and you can pull on it and wiggle it a bit to release it. It happens when the unit hasn't been used for a while. When you next get the unit serviced get the shop to grease the linkage.

Hope that helps, please rate my solution if it does.

Getting a "wiggle" in the back end, more noticeable at higher highway speeds. Also, not really a grinding sound, but not sure how to describe.

A vibration of that sort comes from not having your wheels balanced. That's what those little lead weights are. Even if it was balanced at one time the weights sometimes fall off.

I have a craftsman 7.0 hp b&s. question is that, after 5min. of running, very hard to start back up. got new plug, cleaned carb. made sure float works properly. one thing i have noticed that it sounds...

I would do a compression check. If compression is under 60lbs, it would be very hard to start. If compression is not good, don't junk it just yet, rather, check your valve clearance's. Intake should be .005 to .007 thousands and exaust should be .009 to .011. I have seen valve stems grow and have had to grind a few thousands off. If valve clearance is off you could be losing compresson thru a valve. If valves are ok, and compression is low, you have a ring problem. This is where and how i would start. Good luck.

Craftsman LT2000 transmission won't engage

Sounds like you either lost a bearing inside the transmission or that something in the linkage system has come loose and shifted. easiest way is to jack the unit up and visually follow the shifting hardware, while having someone trying to engage it with unit shut off and see is you can visually find where the shaft is slipping or failing to move. Hope This Helps Don

Rear end

Remove the center dust caps from the rear axles, start the tractor up and put it in gear and observe the axles, if one of them is spinning freely inside the wheel, you have lost the 1/4" square key that pins the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you can go back to mowing. This often happens when a flat has been repaired and the wheel pushes the key out the back as you slide it back on the axle. Sometimes it will just barely catch at the edge of the wheel and work for a while then fall out and you not even know it

Craftsman gt 3000 will not drive.

Hi there, On the Craftsman 3000 there is a pin on the back end of the mower that when pulled outward disengages the transmission so it can be moved without it running. Sometimes this pin will stick. It is connected to a lever on the transmission try to push and pull the pin in and out a few times to see if it will free and engage again. You might have to reach under where the lever is connected to the pin rod and try to move it back into position that way. DO NOT REACH IN TO THE TRANSMISSION AREA WITH THE MOWER RUNNING!!! But the pin must be pushed inward for ingagement. This pin will let the mower just sit there like its in nutral and not go anywhere. Try it!!

Hydrostatic Transmission Failure

There is a transmission bypass lever on the back of the mower, if the bypass is moved out of the drive position, it will not drive in either direction, and will be really easy to push.

Craftsman DGS 6500 garden tractor won't engage

Hi
There is a pin in the back by the hitch - make sure it is pushed in. If it is pushed in then check to see if there are any oil leaks under it.
