EXTERNAL HARDRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED IN WINDOWS XP

I HAVE A WESTERN DIGITAL ELEMENTS EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE THAT I HOOKED UP WITH USB AND PUT ITUNES AND PICTURES ON.WHEN I WENT BACK TO IT TO UPDATE THESE SAME TWO ITEMS MONTHS LATER I CANNOT GET IT RECOGNIZED ON THE COMPUTER. I HAVE TRIED SHUTTING DOWN, GONE INTO DEVICE MANAGEMENT , CHANGED THE USB CABLE ETC. AND IT DOES NOT SHOW UP AT ALL.

DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH MY COMPUTER BEING OLD 2002 COMPAQ PRESARIO 32 BIT (XP) ??

My WD Elements portable drive began to be recognized only some of the time upon boot. But it would always be recognized when I unplugged the usb cable and put it back in. I concluded that something was amiss in the boot process. After trying various possible solutions which seemed to only temporarily fix the problem, I went into BIOS and changed the Boot sequence so that the HD booted first, the CD/DVD 2nd, and the FLOPPY (which contains the USB BOOT) third. Originally, the FLOPPY was booting first. This alteration has thus far resulted in the WD Elements portable drive being recognized consistently on boot. This was performed on a Presario SR1520AN with a Windows OS of XP SP3.

I cant access files on my western digital 612 gb external hard drive. I have tried trouble shooting and the disk is not recognized. It says the data is unreadable. I hear the disk spinning, the light is...

take your harddrive to someone who has a linux operating system. have them open terminal and perform a dmesg. if the linux system recognizes the harddrive, have them perform a mount. if unsucessful have them perform a foced filesystem fix. then have them attempt to mount the clean filesystem if this is a nogo, your harddrive is deader than dead. if the linux user can mount the filesystem, he or she can pull your data and save your life. if not, then uhh you lost your data im afraid.

Go to add new hardware wizard. This may not come with a disk if you do have a disk it will ask you to put disk in. If you do not find it there go to the HCL directory of the western digital website for installation directions.
