Question about Haier HDN455 Dehumidifier

Haier dehumidifier either model hd456 or hd 656. Turn on. Motor runs fine. No water condenses at all. Phone support suggests change the filter (I'm not convinced) but the filter holder does not come out and nothing in the user manual mentions the filter. The model number is not listed on fixya on the website. Frustrating.

Hi,

If you are getting no water condensing at all I would have to disagree with the phone support information you got. If the coils or filter were having trouble we would have frosting problems which would give you some condensation and water removal.

On these units if the compressor is running and no water is being pulled from the air it indicates there was a leak in the system and the unit has lost it's refrigeration (freon) charge.

Unfortunately Haier technical support and documentation is lacking for portable appliances such as this.

    Is there a particular noise that would confirm that the compresser is working rather than just say a fan?

    If we assume that the lost freon charge is the problem, would the next step be to get the unit serviced. The unit is maybe two years old and has had minimal use and no misuse as far as I could tell. Is a leak in the freon charge something that would generally be covered in a standard limited 5 year warranty?



    Are you saying that you do not have information about how to remove and replace the filter (not that I think that is the problem either, just that it does not seem to be intuitive and no instructions seem to be easily accessible.)

    Hi Walter,

    The compressor is located near the fan and should have a bit deeper and more of a buzz sound when running. If you have access to an amp meter it can be put on the wiring to the compressor to verify it is running.

    This model has had a history of leaking refrigerant. The main warranty on these are one year for parts and labor. There should also be (check your manual to verify for sure) a 5 year parts only warranty on the sealed system that would cover a leak.

    Thanks. Seems to be the correct description of the problem. Called the company. No warranty without and original receipt and even then labor would probably be more than the cost of a new unit. Do you have a make and model that you would recommend for us to purchase. We care most about energy efficiency and mechanical reliability. Feel a bit burned on this one.

    Hi,

    I do not deal in the sales end, only service so not real familiar with the specific model numbers. I know Whirlpool was the one that seems to work the best and minimal complaints. Kenmore has been a good name also.

Does the Fan on a Haier HD456E always run,


I believe the fan is designed to run all the time, and no, it costs very little to run an 18w fan. You can use a timed socket, or switch it on and off when needed. I don't believe the Haier has specific switching times.

This is not a new unit and has never had a problem before now. It runs as though normal but it does not collect any water at all. All things you say to check have been done.


Since you have already done the things we say to do, with no success and yours is not a new unit. It may be time to replace it. As often is the case, repairing older units can cost as much or more than a price new one. If you have been satisfied up to now with Haier, purchase another one from them. Their new electronic models are Energy Star Rated. However, this time if you do, also purchase and extended warranty. In the long run, it could pay for itself.

The dehumidifier will run, but will not collect any moisture from the air. The screen has been cleaned, the tub is cleaned, but no water will collect.

Machine works, but no water collecting


A dehumidifier is basically a cooler. The condenser coil on the outside should feel cold to the touch usually around 34 to 38 degrees, as air passes over the coils they collect the humidity in the air and it then drips down into a collector tray. If the coil does not feel cold it is ether a bad control switch not letting the cooler (compressor) turn on, low on freon, or burned out compressor

Sounds to me like you are low on refrigerant if you can hear the compressor running. Its not worth to pay to get this fixed unless you know someone who can do it for you, cheaper to get a new one

Dehumidifier runs but does not collect water


I have dehumidifier Whirlpoot Gold Model #39R171E Serial #H/XE11M1K 6203A it was working fine last year, but this year it is not collecting any water, it is running for day. I opened it, cleaned the filter (which was mostly clean) & it still has not water in bucket. What is wrong & is it possible to fix it by myself.
