Question about Ford Garden
I was mowing with my older Ford garden tractor, which has a Kohler 14 hp engine. It made a clunk and now has no compression. I pulled the spark plug and the piston goes up and down, which I believe eliminates a broken rod. Anyone have any ideas of what is wrong and how big a job this is? I don't want to buy a new one right now if I can help it, but can't see investing $500 in a repair. Hoping it is an easy fix.
Check the compression. it may just be a blown head gasket or a push rod may have broke or bent. possible a stuck valve or valve seat. if the engine still spins over by hand it should be a easy fix. and a cheap fix also if you do it yourself. it will require a few special tools and valve grinding compound but there are videos on you tube that show how to do this.

SOURCE: NO FORWARD NO REVERSE
I had the same problem so I looked under the mower and the belt that goes from the engine to the back of the mower was off so I pushed the clutch as far forward as I could and the belt went on it and it worked

check two things, make sure the by-pass rod is pushed all the way in and the drive belt from the engine to the rear end (tranaxle). If both check out ok do not attempt to service the tranaxle at home. have thet serviced by a dealer.
