How to repair or fix a Dehumidifier when it leaks or overflows

Nine times out of ten, a problem with a dehumidifier can be traced to electrical parts-not to the compressor. If the problem is being caused by the compressor and the unit is out of warranty (most have a 1-year limited warranty), strongly consider replacing the unit rather than trying to have the compressor repaired. If you're thinking about having the unit repaired, be sure to ask for an estimate.

Unless it is designed to drain automatically, a dehumidifier should be emptied fairly often during hot and muggy or damp weather- sometimes as often as once a day. In humid, damp climates, a dehumidifier's reservoir can pull as much as 50 pints of water from the air a day. Failure to keep the reservoir clean and dry will just contribute to the problems you're trying to solve. If you're in the market for a new dehumidifier, consider its reservoir capacity: Larger capacity reservoirs work more efficiently and have to be emptied less often.
Many dehumidifiers have a float switch that prevents the unit from spilling over with the water that has been drawn out of the air. Sometimes this switch goes bad and must be replaced. If your dehumidifier is overflowing, you can test the overflow prevention switch with a volt-ohm meter.
1) Unplug the dehumidifier and remove the switch.
2) Disconnect the leads and clip the leads to the terminals on the switch.
3) Check the pan or reservoir and empty it if necessary, or make sure the drain isn't clogged.
4) Straighten any kinks or bends in the unit's hose.
5) Set a volt-ohm meter to the RX1 scale (or to K-ω or ω resistance on a digital meter) and depress the bar or trip lever on the switch. If the meter's needle shows no continuity as the switch is clicked back and forth, the switch is probably faulty and will need replacement.

Why does blower wheel stop on Frigidaire dehumdifier?

Good Afternoon Desi,

I understand that the blower wheel is not spinning on your Frigidaire dehumidifier, model# FAD504DUD. I also see that the compressor will stay on unless the dehumidifier is unplugged. I suggest you contact the manufacturer for further assistance. They can possibly clarify why the compressor stays on and why the blower fan is not working. If not, they should at least be able to point you in the right direction of having your dehumidifier working. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

I have a frigidaire LAD704DUL 70 pint dehumidifier. Last year it worked great. This year, it has not collected any water in the bucket. The motor runs, it is on CO setting but still no water. I have...

If you have a dehumidifier that is not producing any water then you are wondering what you need to do to get this thing to work for you. In some cases you may be able to do something and in other situations there may be nothing that you can do.

If you do not hear the compressor running and the unit says that the humidity in the room is higher then the setting, then you have a problem with your dehumidifier.

A few things that can cause this are:

The circuit board relay has gone bad...replacement of this board will often cost more then a new unit. This also is a very common problem with many dehumidification units.

The compressor has failed...if you hear a buzz for a few seconds, every few minutes, then you have a bad compressor or at least bad start components on the compressor. Either way it again is a costly repair.

If the compressor is running and the coils are not getting cold then you have a refrigeration system leak. Recharging or fixing these units is very difficult and is another costly venture compared to the price of a new dehumidifier.

If the compressor is running but the fan is not, this also will cause low water production and continual freezing of the coil.

If the compressor and the fan are running but the coil is totally blocked then you will get no water production. Air needs to be continually moved over the cold coil to get the water out of the air.

If nothing is running, then you may also have a control board failure. Or the humidity sensor or humidistat has gone bad which tells the machine to run. If the sensor says that the humidity is low enough then it will never run.

Also if nothing is running check the float switch or the bucket switch. Many of these switches are very touchy and if you do not have the bucket in place just exactly right it will not trip the switch to allow the unit to run. These switches often are more fragile then they should be and break easily. The good thing is that when available they are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive.

There are some parts available for a few brands, but with the prices for most of the parts that you can replace running anywhere from 40.00 - 80.00 dollars, replacement parts with labor to install them, makes a repair more then the few hundred dollar cost of many of these dehumidifiers.

As you can see there are quite a few things that can cause your dehumidifier not to work. Systematically go through the list and eliminate things to get to the bottom of the issue causing your problem and then decide if it is worth spending the money to try to fix the old unit. Only you can make that decision.

I have the FAD704TDP 70 pint dehumidifier and it keeps freezing up right behind the filter. What steps would I take to keep it from freezing? Thanks

Blocked/poor airflow are the most likely culprit. Make sure the filter and evaporator are clean. If the evaporator is caked with dirt you can try carefully cleaning it with a wet rag and a shopvac. If they are both clean check to make sure the fan is blowing air across the coils. Final diagnosis would be a refrigeration issue.

My dehumidifier does not work at all anymore

I had the same problem with mine. I had it less than 2 years. The compressor seemed to kick on, but no water collected in the pan. the compressor should be covered for 5 years, but unless you have an extended warranty, there will be a service charge.

My dehumidifier was fried during a thunderstorm and nothing worked afterward, and it wasn't running at the time. I just bouught a frigidaire (45 pint) and I love it! no noise!

Doesn't collect water, freezes on top

clean filter and then check the coil behind the filter to see if clean. Biggest things that freeze a unit are dirty filter or coil...or low on freon.

Unit is repeatedly freezing up

Almost all dehumidifiers now have automatic defrost, but if you are seeing frost is just one small area, it means there is a refrigerant leak. Check your warranty to see if the sealed system is covered longer than one year. Generally, if it is, most manufacturers will replace the unit (rather than repair it, as the repair is rather expensive compared to the cost of a new unit). If you do not have any sealed system warranty coverage left on it, don't fix it. Buy a new dehumidifier.

I have a 45 pint. I have to slide the bucket in and out of the unit multiple times. Make sure to wait a few seconds after each time to see if it will recognize no water (sometimes the red light comes on, but then changes it mind). Also, I've found that leaving the bucket a little crooked will make it respond. It sucks, I know. Mine is only a year old too. Should not be a problem like this!
