Yes, you will gonna have to replace the defective capacitors. No special skills required, all you need to do is to remove them, find identical replacements and solder them back in.
Why did they failed so fast? The usual cause is overheating - make sure the tv's have plenty of free space around them. Also make sure the power coming to that tv is clean - parasites coming thru the wall socket can easily damage the power souce of a tv. If you live near a place where heavy machinery running on electricity is used an line protector is mandatory.
The second cause of failure is that you bought a dud - a cheap product that was build cheaply, with low quality components. Since this is a BB device(which they have refused to support) i personally lean toward that as being the cause.

Yes, the mains voltage is ok but if you have a good multimeter capable of displaying the peak value you should check that the peak value is less than 200V , otherwise there's a very high risk of failure for the main line capacitors due to overstress (in the country it happens more often than you think).

Once you have replaced the capacitor all you need to do is to check the voltages - if some are lower or even off then check the power transistor and the stabilizers. All you need for that is a decent multimeter.

I have a Philips Plasma TV that is having a problem when turning the power on. A blinking red comes and after un-pluging and re-pluging a number of times it finally works. Does anyone know a trustworthy repairperson in Toronto, Canada?

I'd like to help you with your Philips Plasma TV situation.

I am not the guy to walk you through servicing your TV, but I am the guy who can source you the Service Manual for your unit & the relevant SDI PDP Repair Manual. (Just click free when you follow those links; they are too big to be hosted here at FixYa.)

Please follow the safety precautions!
And don't give up harassing who you bought it from - if it has a warranty contract on it, they don't get the right to choose whether to honor it or not.

I hope that helps.

Paul; clearly I'm six years late to this party. As "Fernie" said, can you repost the links to the service and repair manuals?

Philips tv model number 50PFP5332D 37 wont power up

I have the model Philips 37PF7320A/37 won't turn on and MOST articles on the Internet say it's the Capacitors capictors capictors..I checked all of them. My tv just blinked red lights, had the clicking sound at first power on, but then goes black. No sound. No picture. Nothing. Just blinking red lights.

MINE WAS RESISTOR no. 3318 , a 100 OHM RESISTOR ON POWER SUPPLY BOARD.

I BOUGHT REPLACEMENT FOR .99 CENTS SOLDER IT, AND EVERYTHING WORKED!!!

THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK.

JUST A SUGGESTION..
1. CHECK FOR BULGING CAPACITORS (90 PERCENT OF THE PROBLEM)
2. THEN CHECK FOR RESISTORS WITH MULTIMETER ( FALLS INTO THE OTHER 10 PERCENT OF THE PROBLEM.)

TELL ME IF THAT HELPS..normanw1@yahoo.com

Philips 50PF9630A/37 plasma TV will not power on and has a red blinking light - 6 slow flashes then 3 quick flashes . I've been having the issue on and off for about 2 weeks. seems like when I ...

Hi.

The TV is forced in standby because an internal fault has been detected. 6 blinks slow and three fast blinks points at defective Ysus board or defective buffer. The power supply must also be tested. Till now the TV was starting because when you disconnect power you discharge internal components. Some of the components have the role of storing charge (the capacitors). If a capacitor is defective the TV may still work as other components will compensate the function of the faulty part. After a while more components will fail and the TV will not start anymore. To fix the problem the TV must be tested at component level. Testing will start from PSU voltages to YSus and buffer boards.

RED LIGHT BLINKS SEVEN TIMES

The most likely problem are two failed capacitors on the main board in the center of the TV The failed parts are easy to identify as the top of the cap will no longer be flat but will have bulged up. DO NOT attempt to remove the back of the TV unless you know what you are doing.
soldering on a circuit board will be required to fix this problem.

Blinking red led light when I plug in the tv then it turns right

Phillips purchases the main circuit board from Samsung, and it has a problem with capacitors failing. The failed capacitors can be easily identified as the top will no longer be flat, but will have bulged up.
If you have a local TV repair shop they can help you.

System will not power up

Remove the back from the set and look at the power board in the center of the TV. It will probably have one of more capacitors with the tops bulging out. Replace them with the same value part. Available from radio shack and almost any electronic suppliers.

Magnavox Plasma HDTV Red light

I had a similar problem with my magnavox tv with the blinking light issue. Eventually it just didn't come one anymore. Looking at other forms they said the problem was a bad capacitor number 2074 located on the power supply board. When I opened my tv, I noticed that the capacitor was bulging and burnt up. I bought a new one labeled 2200uf 35v and did some solder to attach the new piece. Put the tv back together and it works like new. No more blinking light. I hope this helps.
