I have been so frustrated with this same issue! I tried everything, but thank God, this fix has worked for mine, and I hope it will for you. The problem is having skipped very important Step 2 of scanning the alignment page through the top scanning bed, which then completes the whole align process.
(1) I turned the machine off, then unplugged the power cord and USB cord from the back. I waited a few minutes, hoping the machine resets to defaults when powered off.
Instruction # 8 on the enclosed instructions says, "Note: Before aligning the print cartridges, use the arrow keys to select the control-panel language and location."
I had never able to do this, because the machine just beeps in protest and tells you to align the cartridges.
(2) So I gave up trying to set the language, and just moved on to reinstall the print cartridges, and pressed OK to align. After a noisy and somewhat lengthy process, out comes your alignment page.
(3) VERY IMPORTANT! This is where most have us have probably gotten stuck. Read the alignment page. It says to Now, (1) Insert this newly printed alignment page through the scanner on top of your printer, where the white arrow is- face up, and with the three black squares facing left, to be scanned first.
And (2), press OK.
The sheet moves through the scanner, comes out underneath, and finally, your alignment message is gone, hopefully for good.
I'm so grateful- this thing was going back to Costco today if this incessant Align Page problem continued. I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: align cartridges error
This means one of the cartridges is defective, they cant align if they cant print. What i did to fix this problem is insert 2 working cartridges and get it to align properly, even if they are low on ink, then lift the cover and the cartridges will move to the center. When this happens pull the power cable out, then insert the full non functioning cartridge. Plug the power cable back in. I tried this with a color cartridge, the color cartridge was non functioning but i was able to print in black.
Basically you align the cartridges and then swap them so the printer thinks they are still aligned.
The color still doesnt work and it is probably a defective color cartridge.
