You will need to apply pressure to the top section of the rear cover.
Look for where the front and rear are joined at the top, and press down while pushing backwards. Becareful though it dosn't slip out of your hands and end up on the floor.
The point you need to adjust is on the flyback transformer (can't miss it..huge blob with a red lead going from it to the back of the tube).
There are 2 adjustment screws on the side. One for focus, one for screen. Have the monitor on and move the focus screw slowly left and right until you are happy with the picture.
DO NOT AT ANYTIME TOUCH THE CHASSIS WHILE THE SET IS ON. USE PLASTIC ELECTRONICS SCREWDRIVERS TO PREVENT ELECTROCUTION.
Please, take the greatest of care if you intend to open it up. These are very high voltage devices and will kill.

In general when it comes to CRT monitors these days it is cheaper to buy a used LCD monitor then to repair a CRT.

For reference, a 15" LCD is the same size as a 17" CRT with viewing size.

I hate to say it, but for what it is worth, you are better off to just go the LCD route.

    Good luck =)

blurr y means focus out.
Also adjust brightness (reduce and check half an hour if not blur quickly need to adjust focus)

therefore need to getting help by professional technician to adjust the focus preset in the Fly back.

Also need to careful to avoid arc high tension voltage from anode and from fly back.

Also don't turn white balance much . may be monitor display off when power on if turned more. if reduce much monitor will black.

Image not focused

Possible worn out tube. The focus adjustment is on the flyback transformer and has to have the back cover removed to access it. The flyback will be a black and have a red wire connecting to the crt tube. This is very high voltage and can be dangerous. With a plastic screwdriver you can turn the focus adjustment knob on the transformer. Do not adjust the screen control knob. If the focus does not clean up, then the tube is probably worn or the flyback is bad.

My monitor compaq FS740 is out of focus

Focus adjustment on a CRT monitor is a simple thing to do, although you need to open the case and there are HIGH VOLTAGES inside.

The adjustment is actually on the high voltage (flyback) transformer. There are two screwdriver adjustments, the one you want is labelled Focus (of course). Do NOT adjust the other one, you may destroy your monitor and injure yourself.

This MUST be done with a plastic adjusting screwdriver, NOT with a metal one. This transformer produces in the range of 25,000 volts, from the high tension lead on the top which plugs into the back of the picture tube. This lead still has very high voltage present, days after turning off the monitor.

If you don't feel competent to do this, that's fine, take it to a technician who is comfortable with it.

You have been WARNED of the dangers.

It's also possible that the lack of focus is a symptom of something more drastic being wrong, in which case you would probably think about buying an LCD screen.

Go to "Picture Boost" option in the "OSD window". Then turn on the "Bright Frame" option and after that make the "Frame Size" to 100. That's it now you can get a perfect sharp image...it worked for me.

Image blur

You need to check that display resolution in your Display properties is set to the native resolution for wide monitor typically 1440><900 for the size you mention.
Blurred image is due to using 4 : 3 resolution setting of 1024 >< 768 on a 16 : 9 wide monitor.
