USB ports on computers can be either the older '1.1' speed, or the newer (and much faster) '2.0' high-speed.

Your external drive is capable of using the high-speed USB 2.0 interface, but you connected it to a USB 1.1 port on your computer.

So, you can either "live" with the slower speed of a 1.1 port, or you can "upgrade" -- add hardware to your computer to add USB 2.0 ports -- so that the external drive will be over 7 times faster.

The computer won't recognize the simple 250 with just the USB plugs

It doesn't require a power supply You may need to install a mass storage driver. What operating system are you using? Vista? XP? Win7? Win8? 32 bit? 64 bit? Was the drive used on a Mac? Are you on a PC right now with it?

Thanks for asking your question on Fixya. ;-)
What error messages are you seeing, if any? Does Apple OS recognize it at all? Also, did you format the drive on a windows computer? How about deleting the partition and plug it back into the macbook so the macbook can set it up for you. If you plug it into the windows machine, what messages did you get from that?

Computer won't recognize external hard drive anymore Hitachi lifestudio

Try connecting the external hard drive to another computer to recover/backup your data.
When you have such a large capacity hard drive, it pays to have a second large capacity hard drive to backup your data in the event of the other hard drive dying.Hard drives do fail especially if you accidently drop it.

I have a hitachi 2TB simpledrive. If I have it switched on and connected to the pc before switching the pc on, any data transfers (read/write) to the drive are very, very slow. If I power up the pc first...

I am wondering if there was any 'Backup' software that came with this, that you may have installed...or any other you own?
Just a guess, but with my own external, I always keep it running clean of these, 'cause that's why I bought the thing in the first place, to throw whatever 'I' wanted over to it, not have Windows decide for me...
Just a thought.
