I have spent alot of time inside the ps2 and I know what ribbon you are talking about know did you pull it out of the slot or right off the chip canuse if its out of the slot you can easily put it back in once you find the slot but if its off the chip you may want to get a pro to solder that back on for you its very dificult and if done wrong will turn your ps2 in a useless paperweight

The console works (comes on , tray opens and closes,) after putting disc in tray and closing it makes a sound like disc reading then stops ,nothing on screen ,,Is this a replace the laser job??

its not dealing with the laser. your cord inside connecting your ps2 top cover to your tray might be lose or not connecting like it should. take apart the ps2 and see if it is connected. if not place it back inside the tray slot inside of the ps2.

No disc works for PS2

Hi, it sounds like your laser is either dirty or dead. first try to clean your laser with a Q-tip and some glass cleaner (no streaks that way). This will require you opening up your PS2. Take all the screws out of the bottom os it and pull the top off, be careful there is a ribbon cable that is attached to your power and eject buttons. You will be able to see your DVD drive. take all 4 screws out and take the top off. The laser will be right there. Swab the laser with the Q-tip and use the dry end to dry it off. Put the top back on and plug it in to the wall and your t.v. See if it will read the discs before you put it back together. If it won't then your laser is shot and needs replaced. But while you have it apart you can order a new laser for about $29.00 and install it while its apart. If it does read the discs then its fixed and you can put it back together.

Ps2

you were taking apart the ps2 since this is the fat ps2 im supposed to think first since your in the ps2 clean out the dust in it for future problems dust is why people keep throwing out fat ps2s and buying small ones they think its broke but its rather a dust problem clean it out the pute all the bolts in the right place if you dont have certain bolts in the ps2 doesnt start so have all the bolts in if its a ps2 slim try to unbolt all of the top and slide the lift thing in there scould be a little place in the top to just pop it in or bolt it in.... that could be a problem with the ribbon slide it back into the slot hopefully it still works the ribbon is really impotant its like a conector of the top and bottom part of the ps2 if all else fails get a repairman there are youssally reapair people at your local game place bestbuy, eb, gamestop ect.

Disk reading error

Hi Tyrell,

What kind of disc is it? The PS2 can sometimes have a dirty lens and not read discs. It does not matter if the Disc is new and unscratched.
I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. REmove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the REset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the Cd tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the Cd area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. REmove the little white disc from the Cd tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and your in business.

No data error all discs, even new ones

Hi STokesG101,

I am StokesG too.  Greg Stokes From South Carolina USA.  You Laser has melted.  If you good with Electronics repair like me, you could open the case back up and replace the laser.  The Ribbon cable that connects to the laser is held in place.  You have to carefully unlatch the retainer that holds the Ribbon in.  I think it is read and pulls out on both ends of the ribbon connector.  Its not a flip up type, it is a pull out type connector.  You can get another laser from www.repairmyvideogame.com

I can replace the laser for you for $40 which includes return shipping.  My email is repairtech@playstationclinic.com and I run the website www.playstationclinic.com
