Spin Cycle is very loud on front load washing machine

See here
How to fit a Bearing in a Washing Machine | Appliance Repair Help

  • If a washing machine is rumbling, and very noisy on spin, the main suspect is the drum bearings. Drum bearing failure is common on many washing machines due to water getting into them if the drum bearing seal fails. (Hotpoint and Zanussi in particular in my experience) To check for drum bearing failure you can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand. If the drum rumbles when spun then the bearings may have gone. There should be a constant rumble all the time the drum is revolving.
  • Another drum bearing failure symptom is excessive up and down play in the drum which can be checked for by lifting the drum up and down from the drum lip behind the door seal. A further symptom of drum bearing failure can be a brown rust patch underneath the washing machine and down the back of the outer drum, underneath the drum pulley (where the belt goes) although this patch is not always present. There are usually two small holes at the back of the drum bearings where water that has got past the drum bearing seal trickles out, and it's usually stained with grease and rust if water has got into the bearings.
  • Loud noises when turning the drum by hand can also be caused if the drum itself splits, or the spider at the back of the drum has come away from the drum, is corroded or even broken. This would normally be a loud noise on each revolution of the drum whereas the noise when drum bearings have gone is constant all the time the drum is turning. Lifting the drum checking for excessive play can often reveal a broken or loose drum spider which sometimes only occurs at certain points round the drum (the spider has three arms and is bolted to the drum at three points)

Kenmore Model 417.4414200 - during the spin cycle, there is a very loud knocking noise. I tried redistributing the load thinking that it was out of balance, that did not correct the problem. I am able to...

Could be drum bearing Front loader or a broken spring. If a lot of drum Play then its bearing fault quite a big job/Expensive, consult an engineer if in doubt...

Dryer won't start.. has power sounds like something binding. long buzzing sound when starter depressed. try once or twice and then nothing for a while. come back try again ..long buzzing sound again

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

You did not include a make and model number for your dryer so... this is a GENERIC response. With a make and model number we can better help you.

The long buzzing your hearing is the motor winding trying to start the motor. After 30 - 45 seconds if the motor does not start the thermal overload will cycle and prevent further attempts for around 5 - 6 minutes until the motor winding cools down.

Causes of a dryer motor not starting:
1. Binding.
a. Broken dryer fan blade lodged inside the blower housing
b. Motor start switch failure
c. Motor bearing failure

2. Dryer drum bearing / roller problems
a. The drum can be bound up and dragging on internal components of the dryer
b. The Idler pulley bearing may have failed and it is now a brake.
c. Front or rear drum seals failed / pinched against rear or front of the chassis
d. Drum roller bearing failure and is now a brake.

Reach inside the drum and see if you can turn the drum. If you can not turn it with a little effort, you need to find out where the binding is inside your dryer.

This is the best I can do for the moment without a model number. With a Make and Model number I can provide parts listings and item numbers of where to check.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.
Kelly

This is most likely the drum bearings failing.

Drum bearings normally last a long time (10 years or more isnt unusual), but quite often drum bearing failure is caused by a faulty drum shaft seal allowing a small amount of water through and in to the bearings. The bearings then start to rust and this accelertes how quickly they deteriorate.

Replacing a drum bearing requires well above average DIY skills, so unless you feel you can do it, can get hold of a tech manual, and can find a supplier for the bearings, it's time to get a quote from an engineer.

My Hotpoint WD860 makes a dreadful noise when it spins, but fine at all other times, any idea's?

Just put some grease at the bearings of the drum. This will correct the noise. However, if it persist, your bearing may need replacement.

Drum is rubbing and making loud grinding noise, possibly bearing related. Can anyone confirm the problem and a solution?

Most likely this is the drum bearings.
Quite often bearing failure is due to a faulty drum shaft seal which allows a small amount of water through and in to the bearings. The bearings then start to rust, which then accelerates the wear on the bearings.

Replacing the bearings needs well above average DIY skills to do, so unless you feel confident to tackle the job, can get hold of a tech manual, and can get hold of new bearings, it's time to call an engineer for a quote and then draw your own conclusions as to whether it's worth it.
